The current Republican Party does not believe or promote ANY of the above. Strong national security is probably the one issue with the most support, but pretending to support any of the rest is laughable considering the recent record.

"Principle" in the same sentence with "Republican" and no negation to be seen anywhere? For "Republican" to come to mean even a shadow of what it once meant, you need to frog-march the current leadership piggish rulers out to the gallows and hang them. Slowly.

The problem with the GOP is that they're ignoring the fiscal conservatives and small-l libertarians. I obviously have no problem with them promoting pro-life and pro-traditional marriage views, and no funding for stem-cell research. But the GOP lately has been putting social issues front and center. All that does is turning off the two aforementioned groups, and it also explains why both of Bush's presidential victories were by razor-thin margins.

Again, I am not in favor of social liberalism because it never works with fiscal conservatism. Fiscal & social conservatism should and can compliment one another. If you cut taxes and limit the size of gov't, local communities will take up the slack and help those in need. Ditto for private religious groups. But if the GOP continues to promote the Drug War, gov't-funded faith-based charities, online poker and gambling bans, then they're going to keep losing elections.

Hey, I didn't know Mark had become a syndicated columnist! I've met him many times. A real nice, solidly conservative pol. He was a longtime statehouse rep from Burlington, on the eastern border of Colorado, and rose to Majority Leader. After term limits forced his retirement, he ran for State Treas in '06 but lost in a squeaker.

Try being a left winger. 30+ something constituencies who are all angry and miserable and unhappy and want Gubmint to take up their grievance.....and they have nothing in common except a desire for Big Gubmint.

Social moderates who say they just want government to "stay out of it" will soon be tested. Will they vociferously oppose restrictions on religious speech, taxpayer funding of abortion, and federal legislation to pre-empt state laws on abortion and marriage?

Emphatically, "Yes!"

Now, will social conservatives embrace commerce, free markets, and a truly limited government. Will they stop venturing into envorinmentalism, at least be skeptical of unions, do their best to not spout class envy, and, finally, agree to get behind desperately needed entitlement reforms?
