A cruise ship will evacuate passengers before sailing past the Somali coast and fly them to the next port of call to protect them from possible pirate attacks, German cruise operator Hapag-Lloyd said Tuesday.
An official with the European Union's anti-piracy mission said separately that it would station armed guards on vulnerable cargo ships _ the first such deployment of military personnel during the international anti-piracy operations in the Gulf of Aden.

I’d just give them all sniper rifles and shoulder-fired missiles and stay the course.
Personally I think there should be a cruise ship full of “vacationing” Marines.
When the pirates make their move let the teams go into action with heavy weapons.
It can't be that difficult.
How many teams would love a sunny cruise with a bit of work to take out the bad guys?
Looks like we’re all of the same mindset.
It's not that complicated.
And when the pirates seize the ship anyway... how long until H-L gets another ship to the passengers?
An adventure cruise
There's something like 20,000 ships that pass through the seas near Somalia every year. Realistically, there is simply no way to put armed guards on all of them.
The solution here is for the US and other nations to hit the pirates in their ports, rather than hoping to catch them at sea.
Man up and shoot the bastards, silly Germans.
Sign me up!
No kidding. Just mount a few twin .50s and let the passengers rock and roll.
You could even charge them for the ammunition and make it like a shipboard activity.
Some cruise lines let you shoot skeet...Our cruise line lets you shoot and kill humans!
Hmm ... have a nice vacation aboard the good ship SS Blackwater ... Trapshooting off the stern used to be a cruise ship staple ... perhaps that could be upgraded.
In the New World Order of Kumbaya,
how long until the pirates are given a seat at the UN?
Or just put Obama onboard and all te pirates will change their ways and become peaceful farmers!
Sounds enticing....
Maybe some of those nice GSG-9 boys will enjoy some time on a cruise ship. They can really party!!!
Cheers
Nah, just one squad per ship should do the trick.
This entire situation shows the stupidity and anti-gun hysteria of the public. It would make way more sense to simply have aboard a professional anti-terrorism team. But no. Evil guns may not be allowed to scare the pussies who pass for the public these days. Rather than allow guns aboard for self-defense, the cruise line will lose money on the cruise by hopping the passengers by air around any areas ofm possible piracy. Pitiful.

Nah, just one squad per ship should do the trick.”
Agreed. How did that other old adage go?
“...one mounty (RCMP), one riot...”
Why don't the cruise liners mount some Vulcan guns on their ships?
Pirates should be shot on sight.
Sheesh.
