{Peoples Republic of} Davis fired up over proposed limits on wood-burning in homes

As nights turn cold and days stay gray, the city of Davis is weighing a ban on a symbol of domestic warmth: the wood-burning fireplace.

Not just fireplaces, but wood stoves that don't meet strict environmental standards.

Even the cleanest-burning stoves could be used only about half the days of winter, and then for just six hours a day, under the proposed ordinance. If enacted, it would be one of the toughest wood-burning measures in the state.

"It will restrict burning more than any other ordinance that we're aware of," said Alan Pryor, an environmental consultant who has spearheaded the effort.

The proposed fireplace ban has caused a ruckus in Davis, which currently has few restrictions.

PROPOSED DAVIS FIREPLACE, STOVE RESTRICTIONS

Davis City Council will vote in January whether to impose restrictions on fireplaces and wood stoves. The Davis proposal would:

Ban: Wood burning in open fireplaces and wood stoves not certified Phase II by the EPA;

Permit: Wood burning in pellet stoves or EPA-certified wood stoves on "allowable burn days" for a maximum of six hours a day. The proposal defines allowable days as those with wind speeds of 5 mph or more and light air pollution, as determined by regional air quality officials.

Exempt: Stoves or fireplaces used as a home's sole heat source, or during power failures.

I am chuckling about these bans on wood burning stoves and fireplaces. About 30 years ago the environmentalist whackos had bumper stickers...”Split Wood Not Atoms”...and wood was being touted as a renewable and environmentally friendly source of heat. Had the tree huggers 30 years ago not blocked the development of nuclear power they might be able to enjoy their wood burners today.

It'll be interesting to see how long this lasts. Does connection to PG&E constitute a heat source? (I have electrical service but heat with wood only.)

He who cuts his own firewood is once warmed....Then arrested for cutting firewood, running a chainsaw and owning an axe.

The EPA certifies woodstoves? I’ve never accused the EPA of being humble. They’re always overreaching.

I wonder if we had global warming when the cavemen invented fire?

Environmentalists are going nuts. They basically want people to spend more with the power companies. I don’t believe it has anything to do with the environment. Burning only 6 hours a day increases the possibility of chimney fires. You have to burn out these chimneys and clean out the residue. The best thing is to keep them burning. I burn my stove out twice a day. Let it burn very hot for about 20 minutes each time. These people are crazy and trying to control the people. I would bet that the people that are making this decision don’t have wood stoves and are just jealous that we don’t have to pay as much as they do to heat their homes.

The only problem with that theory is that the people of Davis make Berkeley-ites look like a bunch of right-wingers.

I thought wood fell under the renewable energy category aka “biomass”

Time for “bio”mass revolt. When fireplaces are criminalized only criminals will have fireplaces!

BTW, saws must be CA. certified. (also fuel containers; they must be ‘spillproof’. I use an old plastic gin bottle. It’s illegal.)

Why is this a big deal?

The people of a small town have decided they want less smoke in their town. That’s their business.

Just like desiring less noise, or less public intoxication, or less baggy pants, or less profanity, is the towns business.

It’s their damn town. Leave them be. Worry about what your own local government is doing.
