Baltimore City Schools Close for Inauguration Day!!!
baltimore Sun

The Baltimore school board voted last night to close city schools on Jan. 20, the day of President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration.

No other school system in the metropolitan area is planning to close on Inauguration Day, but many of the districts surrounding Washington are, including Montgomery and Prince George’s counties. Schools in Charles and St. Mary’s counties also will close.

So, is this even legal, has this been done before anywhere else! What gives them the right to do this without the input of parents!!!!

So what? I’ll bet that over half the “students” don’t even show up for school on any other day either. Now they have permission to hang out on the street corner dealing drugs or playing video games in their basement. I’ll bet less than 10% even watch the inauguration and maybe 5% will watch to see if Hussein makes it all the way down Constitution Ave before “something” happens.

Great idea.

Hopefully the merchants will close down in order to stem shoplifting and robberies.

Along with the bars open to 5am, the 3-4 million supporters expected, the lack of enough transportation and housing, and the influx of anarchists, anti-war protesters, hookers and pickpockets, now I have another reason to stay home - ignorant, illiterate and criminal gangs of high schoolers roaming the streets. Man, I truly hope things go well on Inauguration Day because all the libs are setting up a huge powder keg.

If they wanted to show the inauguration and address on TV, that would have been simple enough. But they had to take the whole day off.

They will come. They will party. They will eat like locust:
If the number of predicted vistors comes anywhere near the 4-5 million anticipated, any school district contiguous with the DC boundary line will be forced to close. Traffick will be completely gridlocked, with food, water, shelter, and gasoline in short supply throughout the region. The local papers are saying they expect upwards of ten thousand tour buses. Friends of mine are being offered $3,000 per night to rent out their apartments for the event.

So what? Those kids’ll probably learn more at the inauguration than they ever will in Baltimordor’s crummy schools.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!

Oh good God.

Specifically, since Charles is being “invaded”, I’m not all shocked it’ll close. But even St. Mary’s?

Sick. These people are sick.

Uh, why are you assuming they’ll be AT the inauguration?

It’s not that “too many people will be gone anyway”, it’s that “we need to CELEBRATE and SOLEMNIZE this day by not working on it”.

Hotels are booked for the inauguration all the way up to Philly - Baltimore is full and Philly is also looking that way as well - Unbelievable - I will not be in the city that day/evening - I can tell you that much!

I know this does not make some of my relatives in St. Mary’s county happy at all;)!

In West Virginia they close the schools for the first days of deer season (rifle). I bet Baltimore City schools don’t have any days off for the purpose of going out and shooting animals. (Oh, and my county gets off school for the annual Buckwheat Festival, FWIW.)

No doubt. I’m in St. Mary’s County, a good hour and a half drive from DC. You couldn’t PAY me to go to that Inauguration. I’d like to have the kids sit and watch it, but I’m kinda scared as to what they’re liable to see....

In Jefferson County, KY, where Louisville is located (my hometown) the schools have ALWAYS been off the day before the Kentucky Derby as far as I can remember. Tell me THAT makes any sense...

As a racing fan, and knowing the Derby is a big deal and hugely crowded (also knowing thanks to my cousin who went on 1 of those huge firework festivals on a boat the day prior), I’m not too shocked the immediate county calls off just to deal with the traffic issues.

As to WV, PA has had the Monday after Thanksgiving off for ages. All of it - both my husband’s central area and my friend’s MD-transplant-on-the-border area are evidence.
