NEW DELHI: In another successful anti-piracy operation, Navy warship on Saturday repulsed an attack on a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden and nabbed 23 Somali and Yemeni sea brigands, in a show of resolve to weed out the menace that affected maritime trade in the region.
The pirates on two speed boats had surrounded the merchant vessel flying the Ethiopian flag around noon, when INS Mysore warship intervened and warded off the attack, Navy spokesperson said.
The pirates had fired at the merchant vessel with their small arms, when it sent out a rescue call and the Indian warship, which was sailing nearby moved its Marine Commandos on a helicopter to help the distressed cargo vessel, he said.
The attack took place about 150 nautical miles off Aden and INS Mysore was about 13 nautical miles away from the merchant vessel when it picked up the SOS call.
The Navy flew its Marine Commandos on helicopters to the scene of the pirate attack and rescued the ship. MV Gibe was later escorted to safety, he added.
The Naval commandos also boarded the pirates' boats and seized seven AK-47 assault rifles, two other rifles, a grenade launcher and 13 fully loaded magazines of ammunition from the 12 Somali and 11 Yemeni pirates on board the two pirate boats.
Further search for other pirates, who fled from the spot following the Indian Naval intervention, was in progress, the spokesperson said.
Last month, Navy warship INS Tabar, a missile-frigate, had sunk a mothership of the pirates and had also rescued two merchant vessels that were under attack from the sea brigands.
I wonder... can anyone tell me please if India still has the Death Penalty, and if so, does it cover Piracy on the High Seas?
They should have blown them out of the water rather than let them escape.
Yes, India has the death penalty. Don’t know about the high seas.
I was watching Shadow Force on the discovery channel last night and at the end of the show they ran a little tidbit of info at the end of the show.
Basically they said that the reaction to piracy off the east coast of Africa has led to a dramatic rise of piracy off the west coast of Africa.
India still has the death penalty for murder, but as they probably inherited their laws concerning piracy from the British, it is unlikely that piracy has the death penalty unless it is accompanied by murder or violence with intent to murder as per the Piracy Act 1837....
INS MYSORE
GO INDIA!

Interestingly, before the Nu-Labour came to power and completely abolished the death penalty completely, the 1837 piracy act prescribed a mandatory sentence of death by hanging for anyone convicted of Piracy with Violence. Would have been an interesting test case to have someone captured a mere decade or so ago and convicted of such an offence. We still had an operational gallows that was tested on a regular basis at HMP Wandsworth until 1994, just in case it was ever needed...
“INS Mysore warship intervened”
Boy, I’d hate to have to tell the ladies in a noisy bar, “I’m aboard the Mysore”.
How come it seems like the Indian Navy are the only ones directly confronting these pirates?
Make em walk the plank. (In the spirit of High Seas Pirates!)
I was wondering that too. Quess the other guys think their on a cruise line.
Amazing that this is what makes up such a major threat to the free world.
Now that’s a stealth ship!
Got me to thinking,
What happens if say the Indian war ship caught the pirates within another countries waters as opposed to international waters.
What court gets the call, some Sea court? the country whose waters they are caught in court or do the Indians keep the pirates and throw them in some Indian dungeon?
“Indian Navy repulses attack, arrests 23 pirates.”
Has the Indian Express outsourced to (ap)? Pirates attack the Indian Navy, are repulsed and 23 were arrested?
With all of the layoffs in the media, guess they had to find work somewhere.
While I would have preferred to see: Saw, Sunk, No Survivors... there might be a need for some for intelligence gathering. (doubt it)
BUT, ‘saw, sunk, no survivors’ might be enough to dissuade others from pursuing similar activities.
A similar thought process apparently was in use recently in Mumbai (Russian passport holders were escorted out).
