He wouldn’t won no, but still. Kemp added little to the ticket and seems like a flake to me. Pro-affirmative action. That’s one issue I can’t even see the other side on.

And maybe with the VP nom credit Engler might have run in 2000 and possibly spared us a certain gentleman’s Presidency (he couldn’t have done worse) and saved Spence Abraham’s seat in the Senate.

Abraham was the wrong man to hold that seat. He only had himself to blame for losing when he insisted on wanting to gin up the number of immigrants to the country. He was warned ahead of time it would have a chilling effect on his reelect numbers, and it did. If he had won a second term, it would’ve emboldened him on the issue, and he’d have made Mel Martinez look like a Minuteman. He most assuredly would’ve lost in a landslide in ‘06 because of it.

One thing that troubled me deeply was when he was on Fred’s campaign for a time.

I wish we had gotten someone like Pete Hoekstra to have run for it back then, but he was only a freshman Congressman (although Abraham had never held elective office before, either). I think he would’ve been in a better position to have held it.

One thing that troubled me deeply was when he was on Fred’s campaign for a time.

From what I've read, Abraham was chairman of the MI GOP from 1983 to 1990, and in that time helped John Engler build the party up to a majority status, with Engler as governor and the GOP taking both houses of the legislature. My guess at the time was that Fred saw Abraham as a guy to help build his campaign, and (hopefully) not someone who'd be a big policy advisor.

Yes, that’s correct he was the MI GOP Chair, though prior to his Senate run, he’d never served in any elective office before. I just found it remarkable how politically tone-deaf he was to the concerns of an overwhelming number of Republicans on the issue of immigration. People were warning him ahead of time he was in serious jeopardy, and he refused to budge, and his loss wasn’t even that big a surprise. It just didn’t demonstrate a lot of sense or smarts, which is why I was quite concerned Fred chose him. He was bad news.
