WASHINGTON The US military plans to mobilize thousands of troops to protect Washington against potential terrorist attack during the inauguration of president-elect Barack Obama, a senior US military commander said Wednesday.
They will fly combat air patrols and man air defenses, organize large scale medical support, and help local law enforcement provide security in the capital, said General Gene Renuart, head of the US Northern Command.
"(It's) not because we see a specific threat, but because for an event this visible, this important and this historic, we ought to be prepared to respond if something does happen," he told reporters.
Renuart said some 7,500 active duty troops and 4,000 national guard troops will take part in the operations in support of the inauguration of the 44th US president on January 20.
Overall responsibility for security during the inauguration falls to the Secret Service.
But Renuart's command, which is co-located with NORAD, is responsible for preparing for any contingency.
Some troops will march in parades, serve in honor guards or perform other ceremonial duties, he said.
But most of the national guard troops will back up

Oh hell. It’ll probably be the biggest drunken brawl in history.
Shoot, they'll probably be busy having their own inaugural ball somewhere, whooping it up in celebration of the fact that such an inexperienced weakling will be in charge of the US military. Why rush?
Talk about symbolism...good grief.
protecting Washington from the rabble more like it....
what irony .....deploying our soldiers to protect mass throngs
of people who include thousands and thousands of anti-military
lunatics . Sure it is not a coup about to launch ?
One can only hope .
With any luck, they’ll take the marxist quisling to GItmo.
What terrorist attack? The world loves us now.
Exactly what I was thinking. Terrorism is certainly a concern, but what the security forces are probably mainly concerned about is the kind of insanity which results after the outcome of a professional sports championship game.
They probably have to be on high alert.
It would be horrible for the country if some entity wiped our the entire federal government. All it would take would be a couple of tactical nukes on the capitol area during the inaugural. Who would solve all of our problems if such a horrific event were to occur? Who will fund universal pre-K, and after school programs? It’s scary to even think about....
Why would terrorists want to kill Obama Hussein, he’s one of their own after all? Just like all the other traitorous Democrats for that matter.
Seeing that usurper in an orange jumpsuit would be a real reason for a party in DC.
I kinda wonder about that. I imagine a scenario where the terrorists nuke Washington, only, instead of what they intend—after an initial brief period of chaos—a more decentralized, independent America bounces back stronger and happier.
Perhaps political satirist Christopher Buckley could write a novel around that plot.
Think Andrew Jackson’s drunken inaugural bash crossed with nineties Freak-nik.
Oh, and stir in the NYC 1999 Puerto Rican Day parade sexual assault-fest.
With a dash of NBA post-game car and storefront smash.
Which rabble would that be? The residents or the incoming administration?
I wonder how this will compare with the infamous “black spring break” celebrations....? Anyone...?
But...but...I thought Hussein was a savior!!! Why would he need protection?
Politicians and bureaucrats stand behind the Posse Comitatus Act whenever anyone suggests troops be used to shut down the illegal human and drug traffic from Mexico.
But then they rationalize that it is okay to violate the same law to keep Obama fans from destroying Washington, DC.
We are no longer a nation of laws.
To our politicians the constitution is nothing more than an inconvenient collection of pesky rules they can work around by twisting words and meanings and invoking convoluted rationalizations.
This is otherwise know as prevarication and lying.
How does this square with the Passe Comitatus Act?
