A Champion Of Gun Control (The Infamous Sen. Howard Metzenbaum)
Cleveland Examiner ^ | 12/19/08 | David Codrea

Posted on 12/20/2008 5:37:18 PM PST by Copernicus

Cleveland Scene is profiling three local books on influential people. The one I'm interested in is "Fighting the Unbeatable Foe," an apparent paean to the late Senator Howard Metzenbaum.

Why?

Diemer has what could be called institutional knowledge of Metzenbaum's life and career, having covered him for almost a decade.

The guy is quite correct in telling us to remember Metzenbaum whenever the "common sense gun control" crowd tells us they don't want to ban all private ownership of firearms.

Incrementalism is the time-honored (and very successful) strategy of the left.

When I think of the name of “Metzenbaum” all I can think of is abortion and scissors.

Gun History

A little gun history

I Thought you might appreciate this.

In 1929, the Soviet Union established gun control. From
1929 to 1953, about
20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
-————————— -—————
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. >From 1915 to
1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to
1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952,
20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. >From 1964 to
1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.
-—————————— -————
Uganda established gun control in 1970. From 1971 to 1979,
300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Cambodia established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to
1977, one million educated’ people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

List of 7 items: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note, that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDER LY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it.

You won’t see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it’s too late! The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are ‘citizens’. Without them, we are ‘subjects’. During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

If you value your freedom, Please spread this anti-gun control message to all of our Liberal friends in Washington .

got this in a e-mail the other day ....

Metzenbaum was an embarrassment to the Buckeye state. Nobody loved abortion more than Howie.

I remember Howard Metzenbaum during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings.

When it came time for Thomas’s character witnesses, John Dingle made Metzenbaum look so stupid that all he could do was shuffle the papers on his desk. It was hilarious.

Metzenbaum had been a total jerk to Thomas, and Dingle simply exposed Metzenbaum’s total ignorance.

Metzenbaum could not believe that a articulate Black man could do that to him, he totally lost composure.

Howard Metzenbaum to John Glenn:

Metzenbaum: “How can you run for Senate when you’ve never held a ‘job’?”

Glenn: “I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions.

“I was in the space program. It wasn’t my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line. This was not a 9-to-5 job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank.

“I ask you to go with me, as I went the other day to a Veterans Hospital, and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn’t hold a job.

“You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job.

“You go with me to the space program, and you go as I have gone to the widows and the orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn’t hold a job.

“You go with me on Memorial Day coming up, and you stand on Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I like to remember — and you watch those waving flags, and you stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn’t have a job.

“I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men — SOME MEN — who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself.

“And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible.

“I HAVE HELD A JOB, HOWARD!”

Most all of the North East, west across New York to Michigan is in bad shape, save government towns and universities.

Industrial companies for dying industries, minerals that service cold furnaces and forges, high tax, elderly, high welfare, many permits licenses rules regulations inspectors. Bad weather, old housing stock, poor schools with old teachers getting ready to retire. Lots of debt and pension obligations.

What's your point? Both Glen and Metzenbaum were anti-gun.

Sen. Glen served his country heroically. And on the other hand....

Sen. Metzenbaum did nothing but try to stop Reagan's policies, enforced liberal anti-business legislation, was a hardliner (read abortion) baby-killing proponent, AND was anti-gun.

Choice of the lesser evil.

Senators Metzenbaum and DeConcini Push Restrictive Anti-gun Legislation

The great national debate over federal legislation dealing with semiautomatic firearms reached another milestone on June 22 when the Bush Administration's "Comprehensive Violent Crime Control Act of 1989" was introduced and the Senate Judiciary Committee met but postponed action on the Metzenbaum and DeConcini bills, S-386 and S-747.

Damn, a later post brought up another monster anti-gunner from the past, Dennis DeConcini. Another one who got hammered in the Keating 5 scandal.
