Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has asked most Bush administration political appointees except those targeted for dismissal to stay on in the Pentagon until replaced by the Obama administration in the coming months.
"I have received authorization from the president-elect's transition team to extend a number of Department of Defense political appointees an invitation to voluntarily remain in their current positions until replaced," Mr. Gates said in an Dec. 19 e-mail to political appointees.
The chance to stay is "available to all willing political appointees with the exception of those who are contacted individually and told otherwise," he stated.

Obama’s anti-war rhetoric sure did come to a screeching halt once he got his first intelligence briefing. Must have been a real eye-opener for him to keep all the Bush “war mongers’ in place!
This is what CHANGE looks like?
Somehow I suspect that this will NOT be the policy on judges appointed by Bush.
This is very funny. Let’s flip the logic in the article- some Bush appointees are targeted for removal, and the rest will stay.
The focus is on those who will be staying, perhaps to stir anger in the peacenik crowd?
Fallguys.
I am convinced Bush/Obama/Maliki cut a deal over the summer.
Obama would continue the Bush policy, Bush would cut a deal with Iraq (which undercut McCain) and Maliki would endorse Obama.
Iraqi newspapers reported last summer that Obama told their Foreign Minister that the policy would not change. Obama at the time also indicated he would be open to keeping Gates on.
Events over the summer pretty much took Iraq off the table for the election. Add in the “financial crisis” and voila, perfect storm for Obama.
What does he do when things turn ugly? And they will. Do you think he'll drive further to the center? I don't think so. No, No. He's been there, you see. He's tried that. Didn't work!
I think Plan B for Obama is Bill Ayers at Defense, Bernadine Dohrn at State, and Noam Chomsky at Treasury.
And I kind of think that Obama's Plan B is really his Plan A, but he think he needs to sneak it in sometime later in 2009.
Because “War Team” and “Liberals” is an oxymoron.
“”I have received authorization from the president-elect’s transition team “
Whoa! I missed this- he has recieved authorization from someone with no authority! And he’s acting on it. There have been hints that some Bush admin people are getting orders from The Office Of The President Elect, but this clinches it.
a LOT of white wimmin’ are mad at him,too..
He can't fire Bush-appointed judges, they are appointed for life.
I believe that these people should decline. It is long past time that the democrats be required to stand on their own - and not be propped up by republican hold-over scapegoats.
If their departure will have a direct affect on the troops, they should stay on. If not, let Obambi flounder.
“Must have been a real eye-opener for him to keep all the Bush war mongers in place!”
It’s ok when they do it.
Wow. Gates is taking orders from Obama already? Is that legal?
Ha! Perfect.
Fauxbama is scared crapless, he knows he’s in over his head, and he knows all that rhetoric he spewed for votes is complete crap now that he’s going to be the one where the buck stops.
This administration is going to be the biggest wimp of a presidency ever. This guy doesn’t have a gut to make a gut call from, he’s going to either step back and let his cabinet members run the show, in which case it will be a disaster as they all fight for their own agendas and create chaos.. or he’s going to flale with every decision make bad ones, change them to other bad ones, etc...
Look forward to 4 years of non leadership folks, CYA will be what the coming President is all about.
It should be mandatory for every dim Presidential candidate to get briefed on the national security situation, especially the ones like Zero who ran around screaming about how ‘evil’ Bush’s foreign policy was.
Idiots.
