GWB lost the PR war on Iraq, democrats won even with the successful surge. The public is convinced that GWB and republicans tricked us into invading Iraq for no reason. High gas prices, deficits all blamed on Iraq and GWB. And so GWB was on the ballot 2006+2008. My point is you cant lose the war at home and claim you won. If you have no decent PR plan for a long war then don't invade unless directly attacked like in WWII(Germany declared war). GWB had no long term PR plan because he expected a short painless war and it was big step towards Pelosi/Obama.
