Analysis: Bush's personality shapes his legacy

WASHINGTON, (AP) -- President George W. Bush will be judged on what he did. He will also be remembered for what he's like: a fast-moving, phrase-mangling Texan who stays upbeat even though his country is not.

For eight years, the nation has been led by a guy who relaxes by clearing brush in scorching heat and taking breakneck bike rides through the woods. He dishes out nicknames to world leaders, and even gave the German chancellor an impromptu, perhaps unwelcome, neck rub. He's annoyed when kept waiting and sticks relentlessly to routine. He stays optimistic in even the most dire circumstances, but readily tears up in public. He has little use for looking within himself, and only lately has done much looking back.

Bush's style and temperament are as much his legacy as his decisions. Policy shapes lives, but personality creates indelible memories — positive and negative.

Call it distinctly Bush.

I love Bush. He is the greatest Prez we have ever had.

The most hilarious statement I've seen so far in the new year. Thanks!

I also think we are in a great struggle for our country (your petty tirades are a distraction)...

Bush's $13.35 Trillion in bailouts are not "petty." Neither is the biggest expansion of Government in decades, led by Bush, that would make FDR, LBJ, and other Socialists proud; and neither is the wielding of Federal military power worldwide that would make Wilson have tingles up his leg.

My gosh, you can’t even deviate from your rabid criticism of President Bush (Bush’s bailouts) when addressing the bailout ... Congress authorized the spending (very few had the courage to address/attempt to correct the root cause). Oppression is marching as you shake your fist at the president, do you have any wrath for it’s leaders, or do you just direct it at “Superman Bush” for not saving you.

Bush delusional love post ping, These guys think this is a successful ending of a republican presidency. What is left he hasn’t given democrats?

He is responsible for that nitwit being sworn in the 20th and personally pushed this open border NOW country into socialism and welcomed our enemies in with open arms.

I think your attacking him on things such as his age and college status and his pinging of people makes you look foolish.

So what?

You’re just looking for some line of personal attack I gather. Why not stick to the issue and defend Bush’s record if you disagree with the assertion that it is crappy.

I've posted to this arrogant, smug jackass enough to know that he doesn't deserve my respect. His age and his college status are relevant. He has no real-world experience. He lectures people three times his age on their party loyalty and their pragmatism. He's a punk. He disrespects George Bush with the cliches and trite slogans of the left. He voted third-party in the latest presidential election. He's an Obama enabler.

I offer him a fraction of the disrespect he offers any Republican Party loyalist.

He's not worthy of debate...he's worthy of insult. I'll continue along that line. Save your suggestions for an easier mark.

Hang around here long enough

I've been here since 1998. You?

“sKerry would have been a better vote—at least he wouldn’t have gotten us to this state of affairs, where the GOP is despised and down to only ONE-QUARTER of voters! “

what’s the point of a GOP that isn’t despised if it doesn’t win? At least Roberts and Alito are on the SC.

What’s your malfunction Peter. We’re not allowed to criticize him cause he’s “one of ours”? Well he’s not. He’s no conservative. We should disavow him instead of looking foolish defending him.

I do believe you are the one with a problem, perhaps therapy will help. You are stuck in a grove and can’t escape ... everything is Bush’s fault. There are many others as/or more culpable (if you look foolish it is by not recognizing that) than Pres. Bush, and they are not going anywhere .... Pres. Bush will soon be gone. When will you direct your criticism to those more deserving of it, or do you simply prefer easy targets.

It’s the nuts in the GOP who turned it into a religious organization more concerned with personal issues then fiscal responsiblity that destroyed the party.

Yes. There are good religious people who understand that without personal freedom and fiscal responsibility, all religious conservatism is bankrupt (financially and morally).

But then there are those who seem to think that Jesus got some Centurions to bust heads when people didn't agree with what He said. And they are some who have trashed the GOP.

Wow, did it ever ocurr to anyone that it might be the Rep congress????Their poll numbers are WAy lower than Bush.

While calling from phone banks, I don't recall a single person say they were leaving the GOP because of Congress. The name "Bush," on the other hand, was quite effective in getting me an earful.

If you want to stick your head in the sand for yet another election, fine, but don't expect me to deny reality.

Perhaps one of these would help you snotty.

You are stuck in a grove and can’t escape ... everything is Bush’s fault

What are you talking about boo? This thread is ABOUT BUSH so that's what I'm discussing on it.

There are many others as/or more culpable

Sure the evil rat party and the RINOs in Congress but again this thread is ABOUT BUSH and his crappy legacy so that's what I'm talking about. And you're naive if you think he's not the single biggest culprit as the one with the most power. You just don't want him criticized for some stupid unknown reason.

Well, if the name Bush came up again and again...We can give credit to the MSM! they not only created bush Derangement syndrome in the Left but with Republicans too.

Maybe republicans found it easier to blame Bush than to go state by state and show their outrage to their representatives.

Reality: Bush was a president with very very limited powers and a MSM who distorted everything he did, denounced and attacked him , a Rep congress that betrayed him and us.

Reality: the president is not a dictator.

Now, all together....”the Bailout, the economy, the illegals. etc as nauseum....ITS BUSH’ FAULT!”

“You just don’t want him criticized for some stupid unknown reason”

There you go, trying to divine my motives. I simply see no reason to pile onto someone who is being viciously attacked by the MSM, Democrats, and some of his party, because it is the in thing to do .... apparently you do. I do believe that the most power is wielded by a group of called “Congress” and currently is under control of Democrats .... though I will admit things weren’t much better under the Republicans.

1997...the old black-background days. (OH! How I despised Frames!)

Rapunzel has the habit of pinging her suitors when she finds herself under siege. They always show up and valiantly fight battles on her behalf. Consider yourself among the gallant.

Considering I have specifically requested pings from rabscuttle385, it makes perfect sense that I would receive pings from rabscuttle385. I'm sorry if that upsets you so much or it set off some flag for you (BTW, you forgot to log in with your moderator account.)

And if you've been around since 1998, you should know that if you're going to write about a FReeper, you should ping that FReeper. I have added Rapunzel and rabscuttle385 to the ping list out of courtesy, since you seem to be confused as to whom you are referring.

Well, if the name Bush came up again and again...We can give credit to the MSM! they not only created bush Derangement syndrome in the Left but with Republicans too.

And when do you recall President Bush ever lifting some of the burden from conservatives by countering the claims?

Maybe republicans found it easier to blame Bush than to go state by state and show their outrage to their representatives.

And what did Bushbots do when representatives broke from the Bush Liberalism? They flamed the reps, rather than cheered them.

Reality: Bush was a president with very very limited powers and a MSM who distorted everything he did, denounced and attacked him , a Rep congress that betrayed him and us.

The Rep congress betrayed him?!?!?

He pushed for things and they passed them and he signed them... did they use mind control on him, or what?!?
