The Gaza Ground Assault Rages — But Will it Work?

Undoubtedly, Operation Cast Lead entails loss of life — as has every other military operation since the dawn of history. The United States itself has been engaged for almost six years in military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan that have surely taken their toll in blood. President Bush has not been amenable to ceasefires and “monitoring mechanisms” as ways of dealing with Saddam Hussein, al-Qaeda, and the Taliban. The latest on Hamas, no less vicious than those groups, is that it spent the weekend murdering 35 Palestinians after breaking the legs or hands of 75 others over the course of the week.

For now, we can say the reasons for what is in effect — or in Libya’s case for example, clearly also in intent — nothing less than a push to rescue Hamas, include Arab economic (and particularly oil) power, Western and particularly European antimilitarism verging on pacifism, glorification of the Palestinians, and anti-Israelism/anti-Semitism. Most disturbing is ...

Hamas loves death. They will never surrender. Isreal might as well wipe the whole area clean.

I support the offensive to the hilt, but I would have preferred that Israel continued the attacks from the air for a longer time. These animals are not worth the loss of the two soliers who died so far, nor are they worth the 20 or 20 or 30 wounded IDF.

I believe that the Hamasnazis would have caved in and given what the Israelis wanted after a few weeks of missiles from the F16's. Also, once the ground troops go in, it is hard to get out.

It’s hard to understand Arabs, when they ally themselves with people who cut off hands and do other atrocities to their own people.

You would think they would be just as glad to get rid of these animals as Israel will.

If true it will be the the end of Hamas. They learned nothing from terrorist arabs killing normal arabs in Iraq. Eventually the normal welfare queen palistinians will tire from being hungry and persecuted and start dropping the dime on locations and stashes....

On Saturday night, three and a half years and 6500 rockets and mortars later, a large Israeli force finally reentered the Strip to try and remove what has become a 24/7 threat of being suddenly blown to pieces hanging over the lives of 800,000 Israeli civilians.

And apparently Israel hasn't achieved the "CAN'T WE JUST GET ALONG?" attitude of the great Rodney King" to want for a move into diplomatic discussion for resolution after 60 years of the SAME OL' rhetoric that "WE CAN GET ALONG", and is hopefully going to put a stop to this maddening B.S. once and for all for the good of humankind via force!

If this is purely an exercise to deal with Hamas in Gaza, it will only “work” if all the Gazians are driven into Egypt and the border sealed or if they are exterminated. Neither outcome is remotely likely. If the operation is a prelude to dealing with Iran then we shall see. I pray that Olmert has become a man at last.

Will it work?
Well for one thing I feel good about it.
Too little, hit em harder.
