A silent lunatic attacked a female jogger in broad daylight on Sunday, beating her senseless just steps away from Gracie Mansion, cops said.
The 39-year-old woman, identified as Erika Dreifus, told fellow joggers that the man "never said a word" before he pounced on her on the Carl Schurz Park promenade around 1:45 p.m.
She was not robbed, and cops said the attack looked like a random act of violence.
The bleeding woman was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell, where she was listed in stable condition.
Cops said the attacker ran into the woods behind the mayor's official residence. Investigators were combing the upper East Side on Sunday night searching for the suspect, who was believed to be mentally ill.
"She was on the ground [and] her face was bloody," said a 66-year-old male jogger who remained in the park for nearly two hours after the attack.
EMT workers had a hard time reaching the frightened woman, he said.
Medics had to carry the victim across the promenade on a stretcher, the FDNY said.
The usually serene park overlooking the East River was transformed into a gory crime scene Sunday night.
Pools of blood splattered the promenade and surgical gloves littered the cement jogging path.

TROP?
wearing a Bush-Cheney tee-shirt....not here in NYC...perhaps an Israeli logo.
A lot of rich people in that area. The guys are mostly punks and so probably made zero effort to stop the attack.
there are no “woods” behind gracie mansion. Amazing this psycho wasn’t followed and caught.
And it took detectives two hours to arrive at the scene. Crime is down, so they say. Why then the delay at getting to a crime scene? I picture cops wandering around looking for something to do, something to investigate. Unless “crime is down” is a big fat lie.
Self-defense is a basic human right.
Recently I and a fellow passerby witnessed a mugging on a semi-secluded road in Jersey City and followed discreetly behind the muggers while contacting the cops on our cell phones. In our case, the muggers were caught, one after hiding behind some trash cans on a residential street for quite a while before one of the cops practically tripped over him. (We were all milling around trying to figure out where the second dirt-bag had gone to.)
It was a pretty vicious mugging, in which a young man was punched repeatedly in the head as he struggled to hang on to his wallet. (Not a good move, I know.)
It felt good to help put those dirt-bags in jail and I recommend the experience to others.
Carl Schurz is an urban park. There are trees of course.
And it took detectives two hours to arrive at the scene.Maybe they're following the British model of crime response:
Avoid the crime scene for as long as possible, until you're sure the only thing you're going to need to pull off your belt is a roll of that yellow tape.
The police always seem to take forever to arrive at crime scenes here. Too many instances to mention.
Since Mayor Bloomberg fights long and hard to make it extremely difficult for a woman to have a gun to defend herself from these kinds of animals, I think he should take full responsibility for this attack. Self-defense is a basic human right. The supreme court ruled way back in the 80s, in a DC case, that although the city prevents you from arming yourself, they have no responsibility to defend you.
Wow! I’ve been in that park before.
where do u see that it took 2 hours for dets to get there? Anyway, detectives do not usually show up to simple assaults. The only reason they were there was due to the location, IMHO.
to many freepers, the trees at that park do not equal woods. You can always see concrete from any spot. I live 3 blocks from the park.
I haven’t.
I read this article online last night but it has since been changed to this:;;;
“She was on the ground [and] her face was bloody,” said a 66-year-old male jogger who remained in the park for nearly two hours after the attack.”
Last night it said that the male jogger waited in the park for two hours until the detectives showed up.
unecessary. The cops should have taken this guys info and the detectives would have called him. This is a misdemeanor and did not require detectives at the scene.
