Defiant Burris Heads to Washington to Claim Senate Seat

CHICAGO — Even as Senate leaders continued to challenge his appointment to the seat vacated by President-elect Barack Obama, Roland W. Burris headed to Washington on Monday, setting the stage for a public showdown on Capitol Hill.

In a news conference at Midway airport in Chicago before his scheduled 2:20 p.m. flight to Baltimore, a defiant Mr. Burris told reporters that he was not concerned about the fact that the Illinois secretary of state, Jesse White, has rejected the paperwork that would officially send Mr. Burris to the Senate.

“Why don’t you all understand that what has been done here is legal?” he said. “I am the junior senator from Illinois, and I wish my colleagues in the press would recognize that.”

He later added, “This is all politics and theater, but I am the junior senator according to every law book in the nation.”

Senate leaders have repeatedly said that they intend to block Mr. Burris from joining the chamber, given his appointment last week by this state’s embattled governor, Rod R. Blagojevich. Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, has said that the Senate has the legal right to bar Mr. Burris from the new session, which begins Tuesday

The Republicans should invite Burris to caucus with them.

Mere dhimmicratic posturing. The nominee is the correct color and has the correct political orientation. The dhimmis will make appropriate noises (sorta like fake f*rts by placing one’s hand in the armpit), and they they’ll let him in.

They’ll have no trouble keeping him on the liberal plantation.

Heh.

Obama’s Senate seat is now the Black Seat. You will never live to see anyone who isn’t African-American in that seat.

The Republicans should invite Burris to caucus with them.

He'd never do it, and they wouldn't want someone so liberal. But they should make a show of treating him collegially.

I would be surprised if anything happened. It’s what happens once he takes his seat.

What an ironic comment - Just this morning I was reminded of the scene in one of my favorite movies “Used Cars” where they turn a firehose on a bunch of nuns who are protesting outside ;-)

gosh - how ‘bout that. a Senator from Illinois who actually shows up to earn his salary, instead of cruising the USA to run for President. or maybe that’s next!!!!!

Speaking of movies, I was thinking this could be a great modern remake of ‘High Noon’. Reid in the role of Gary Cooper, little by little being abandoned by his Senate allies, left alone to face down Burris and his henchmen. What drama! What pathos!

No matter what happens, this seat is a lost cause as far as the GOP is concerned (at least until 2010)... so the GOP should be out front embracing him and welcoming him in the senate and making it next to impossible for the Rats to turn him away. He won’t become a Republican, but he may knife the Dims in the back here and there for treating him so badly.

Maybe he flew on Southwest (Midway to BWI) to save money.
If so, not a bad start for a RAT relatively speaking.
