Bennett: Send Moseley Braun to Senate, Not Burris @ 5:02 pm by Hill Staff
Sen. Robert Bennett (Utah), the top Republican on the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, suggested Tuesday that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) should instead appoint former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D) to the upper chamber instead of Roland Burris.
"She's non-controversial, she has been here, she's an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor, and she would be appointed by virtue of her past history," said Bennett, whose committee may soon consider Burris's Senate appointment.
"Everyone would accept her," Bennett said. "If she wanted to compete in the special election, she could. If Burris wanted to compete in the special election, he could."
But the Republican added, "No one will listen to the idea and I don't expect anything to come of it."
Bennett may be overestimating Moseley Braun's ability to avoid controversy. Republicans, during her past elections and during her 1999 confirmation hearing to become ambassador to New Zealand, criticized her 1996 meeting with Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and noted that her 1992 campaign faced accusations of sloppy bookkeeping.
Why do so many Republicans say stupid things? I think they should just hush and let people think they’re wise.
Three ring.circus at that.......
WH, Senate and House
FGETABTHER
No idea why the GOP has received a butt kicking...it's a mystery. </sarcasm>
Shut up, Bennett. Let the Dems screw it up further . . .
just too much drivel on race.
Let the Dems confront their racial problems in the mirror, not the GOP do it for them.
Ah, I have one of those too. I try to put my fingers in my ears and go “Lalalalala” when he talks.
What is Bennett smoking??????
FGS
When she was our Senator, prior to Peter Fitzgerald beating her, we called her Carol Mostly Fraud. She has quite the (un)distinguished record.
Wasn’t she turfed out of office for (among other things) taking her boyfriend on an African vacation at taxpayer’s expense? Illinois politics just get dirtier and dirtier.
Which is exactly why she might be a good choice.
She's a stupid woman who will not be a danger in the Senate insofar as steering bad legislation, etc.
No one takes her seriously.
Any thought I had, that we were going to avoid a Great Depression — and worse — is dashed.
America is run by ass-hats.
“She’s non-controversial, she has been here, she’s an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor, and she would be appointed by virtue of her past history,”
Giiieeekkk! non-controversial? lol
No race is guaranteed a seat in the Senate, thru happenstance or otherwise.
That’s my Senator!.......sheesh.
What a Maroon... this is a Dim battle. Don’t get in the way of a circular firing squad.
Say WHAT??!!
They are stupid, that’s why.
This is just throwing gasoline on a bonfire, it makes me laugh!
???
Racist, but that has become the norm. Horrible idea. Bennett has zero role in this. And how about that pesky Constitution?
Other than that makes perfect sense.
How many years does she have, and will she be beatable after that length of time?
I can not imagin her not getting herself in deep doo doo.
This guy may be crazy like a fox.
Sigh....why do I even bother voting Republican. I wish there was a viable conservative party.
Republicans should consistently raise the message that a special election would be the only fair and sensible way to choose a successor, given that the whole appointment process has been tainted.
I don’t think Illinois politics are any dirtier than they have been for 50 years. A national audience is just more aware of how the Democratic Machine is operating.
When Little Richie’s (socially conservative) father was Da Mare, you used to hear the MSM talk about “Machine politics”. The term seems to be banished from their lexicon because it reflects poorly on the liberal Democrats who populate the current version of the Machine.
Carol Mostly Fraud? NON-controversial??? I seriously hope Bob Bennett is being sarcastic here and mocking the Democrats, otherwise it's safe to assume he's lost his mind. The two served in the Senate at the time, he more than anyone else should know what a joke she was as Senator. How else does he think she lost re-election after 1 term in a RAT dominated state?
The Republican Party is dead. RIP
Especially considering that Mostly-Fraud was voted out of the senate for corruption and gaffes.
Are all Utah Senators idiots, or only Bennett and Hatch?
Being Mormon, I think we should blame his consumption of Postum instead.
What on earth is wrong with Bennett? Does he have no memory of her corrupt history, along with her boyfriend and what a mess in which she was involved? Do they think none of us remember any of that? I am dumbfounded by the idiocy of these so-called republicans.
Carol Mostly Brawn! LOL. Dumber than bad fruit and 10X more corrupt.
she was terrible...entitled...and worthless!
saltnlemons
Asking Blago to appoint her to the Senate is a tacit admission that he retains the right to fill that vacancy. If he has the authority why not Burris? He is well qualified (as far as that term can be used when discussing any politician) and forcing him to appoint anyone else and having the Senate seat them would be a slap in the face to Burris and negate the Govenors constitutional power to select the appointee.
Is there a single candidate being considered in Illinois that isn’t an ignorant black liberal? Seems to me Burris is the best of the worst - least offensive of the bunch. Moseley-Braun? My God man, what are you thinking?
This is why the RNC is so impotent. Basically, there are no honest dems in Illinois; I should know, I live here not Bennett. Does he not remember the past controversy swirling around her regarding campaign spending???!!!!
More importantly (tho not to anyone in media or Washington) Burris is LEGALLY entitled to the spot. So difficult when tedious things LIKE THE LAW get in the way of politics!!!
I wonder if the Kiwis will ever forgive us for foisting that skank off on them as the U.S. Ambassador to Wellington?
I was living in Chicago when the Old Man died. I was driving up the outer drive listening to WLS when the DJ said that Mayor Daley had died and I thought, ‘wow, he is so going to get fired for that’. Of all the big cities, though, Chicago was the friendliest. I don’t know if it’s that way now.
All they would have to do is get Burris to resign the seat that is already his.
I seriously hope that Bob Bennett retires.
Clearly corruption is no big deal.
More importantly, why can’t we have elected officials who actually respect the constitution? Vacancies are not filled by the Senate but by the executive authority of the state.
I was moving into a new apartment when I heard church bells tolling throughout the city. Turned out that Da Mare had died. One of the moments (like JFK’s assassination) that I will never forget. He was quite a character for good and ill.
I don’t know what it’s like living in the city now because I have been in the burbs for almost 20 years. City traffic is horrendous, and we have little tolerance for libbie yuppies, so we stay away.
Chicago was always a friendly town, even with the crime and the corruption. As a Midwesterner, I am biased in that regard. I rarely enjoyed my experiences in the South or the two Coasts. The more time I spent in those areas, the more I dislked them. No offense intended to other Freepers.
OMG... I can’t believe this isn’t satire. Bennett can’t be for real.
I FReeped her once in Richmond. Had a big sign listing some of her highlights in office. The only one I remember right now is her escapade with the Nigerian Toy Boy.
The Dims were peering at the sign through the curtains throughout their meeting with her. Most gratifying.
Is this guy getting senile?!
It can’t a be joke. It would be too funny of one for Bennett to think of.
Yes. Retire old man.
And I hope Matheson takes a losing run for his eat.
I’d be tempted if I was a GOP Senator to savage Burris. But we want him to run for reelection.
They should be quiet and let the ruling party deal with their little mess.
