Bennett: Send Moseley Braun to Senate, Not Burris @ 5:02 pm by Hill Staff

Sen. Robert Bennett (Utah), the top Republican on the Senate Rules and Administration Committee, suggested Tuesday that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) should instead appoint former Sen. Carol Moseley Braun (D) to the upper chamber instead of Roland Burris.

"She's non-controversial, she has been here, she's an African-American, she clearly has not been picked by the governor, and she would be appointed by virtue of her past history," said Bennett, whose committee may soon consider Burris's Senate appointment.

"Everyone would accept her," Bennett said. "If she wanted to compete in the special election, she could. If Burris wanted to compete in the special election, he could."

But the Republican added, "No one will listen to the idea and I don't expect anything to come of it."

Bennett may be overestimating Moseley Braun's ability to avoid controversy. Republicans, during her past elections and during her 1999 confirmation hearing to become ambassador to New Zealand, criticized her 1996 meeting with Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha and noted that her 1992 campaign faced accusations of sloppy bookkeeping.

???

Racist, but that has become the norm. Horrible idea. Bennett has zero role in this. And how about that pesky Constitution?

Other than that makes perfect sense.

How many years does she have, and will she be beatable after that length of time?

I can not imagin her not getting herself in deep doo doo.

This guy may be crazy like a fox.

Sigh....why do I even bother voting Republican. I wish there was a viable conservative party.

Republicans should consistently raise the message that a special election would be the only fair and sensible way to choose a successor, given that the whole appointment process has been tainted.

I don’t think Illinois politics are any dirtier than they have been for 50 years. A national audience is just more aware of how the Democratic Machine is operating.

When Little Richie’s (socially conservative) father was Da Mare, you used to hear the MSM talk about “Machine politics”. The term seems to be banished from their lexicon because it reflects poorly on the liberal Democrats who populate the current version of the Machine.

Carol Mostly Fraud? NON-controversial??? I seriously hope Bob Bennett is being sarcastic here and mocking the Democrats, otherwise it's safe to assume he's lost his mind. The two served in the Senate at the time, he more than anyone else should know what a joke she was as Senator. How else does he think she lost re-election after 1 term in a RAT dominated state?

Why do so many Republicans say stupid things?

Especially considering that Mostly-Fraud was voted out of the senate for corruption and gaffes.

What is Bennett smoking??????

Being Mormon, I think we should blame his consumption of Postum instead.

What on earth is wrong with Bennett? Does he have no memory of her corrupt history, along with her boyfriend and what a mess in which she was involved? Do they think none of us remember any of that? I am dumbfounded by the idiocy of these so-called republicans.

Asking Blago to appoint her to the Senate is a tacit admission that he retains the right to fill that vacancy. If he has the authority why not Burris? He is well qualified (as far as that term can be used when discussing any politician) and forcing him to appoint anyone else and having the Senate seat them would be a slap in the face to Burris and negate the Govenors constitutional power to select the appointee.

Is there a single candidate being considered in Illinois that isn’t an ignorant black liberal? Seems to me Burris is the best of the worst - least offensive of the bunch. Moseley-Braun? My God man, what are you thinking?

This is why the RNC is so impotent. Basically, there are no honest dems in Illinois; I should know, I live here not Bennett. Does he not remember the past controversy swirling around her regarding campaign spending???!!!!

More importantly (tho not to anyone in media or Washington) Burris is LEGALLY entitled to the spot. So difficult when tedious things LIKE THE LAW get in the way of politics!!!

I was living in Chicago when the Old Man died. I was driving up the outer drive listening to WLS when the DJ said that Mayor Daley had died and I thought, ‘wow, he is so going to get fired for that’. Of all the big cities, though, Chicago was the friendliest. I don’t know if it’s that way now.
