CHICAGO (CBS) ― A primary election is set for March 3 and a general election for April 7 to fill the U.S. House seat being vacated by Rahm Emanuel.

Illinois Republicans say the special election could be also be a chance to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate.

Emanuel is leaving Congress to become Obama's chief of staff.

...snip ...

On the Republican side, Tom Hanson, who ran against Emanuel in 2008, and Illinois Minuteman Project founder Rosanna Pulido are among those reportedly interested.

Rosanna Pulido is FreeRepublic's very own CHICAGOLADY!

Rosanna's formal announcement is expected early next and week her website RosannaPulido2009.com is up but still under construction. There are some great video clips available now and it will be fully functional by announcement day.

Yes, it most certainly could! It would be a great opportunity for us to pick up a Senate seat and embarrass Obama and the entire Democratic Party! Wouldn’t that be fun??? Better stock up on popcorn!!!

Good idea in theory, in tough to accomplish in reality. Most of the pros say it more than likely take until June to get a STATEWIDE primary and special eection accomplished. One congressional district is fairly manageable.

That will probably never happen. Burris is determined that he will be seated and Reid practically caved by saying that the Lt. Governor’s signature would be good enough.

Too late. Blagojevich appointed Burris under the existing law, it can't be changed now. The Republicans will have to get their ducks in a row for 2010.

So Illinois has different laws to replace Representatives and Senators? Representatives have special elections and Senators are appointed by the Gov.

Yup. To my knowledge vacant house seats are always filled by special election. Senate vacancy replacements can vary state by state.

Wooo hooo!!! Go Rosanna!!

Looks like we can have a long overdue Chicagoland freeper reunion here. The good news is that it looks like Chicagolady will be the only conservative on the ballot. The only other "Republican" interested in this race, Tom Hanson, ran as Dem lite against Rahm Emanuel last time and didn't come close to winning. I think we can make a good case to GOP voters that they ought to consider an alternative.

This will be a really tough race though, given the 5th historic Dem leanings. The one advantage on our side is the Dems took back this district in 1996 by running "scandal free" Blagojevich, who was succeeded by "scandal free" Rahm Emanuel when Blago became Governor in 2002. Now both of them look just as bad as the last Dem they tossed, Dan Rostencowski. The message here should be clear: 5th District voters will NEVER get clean and honest government as long as they continue to elect CROOKS put up by the Chicago machine!! The Cook County Democrat Party is a CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE. I hope Chicagolady will have campaign literature with Rostencowski, Blago, and Emanuel side-by-side, with the caption "Had Enough?"

What date is the primary election? I don't know if I'll be able to gather signatures, but I definitely want to help walk precincts.

Some advice to Chicagolady: seek out the last Republican who won this district, Michael Patrick Flannigan, and find out what he did to score an upset in 1994. And look into that network of people you've supported in the past who owe you big time. Jim Oberweis certainly should be able to fork over the maximum $2,000 donation for you after all the cash he able to spare for his own campaigns.

Where is the 5th District?

Good question. It's sprawling, but not as over gerrymandered as some. It starts just behind Chicago's Lincoln Park and goes north thru Boystown and Wrigleyville then heads west out the Lawrence-Irving corridor and then swoops south to North Avenue and west past I-294. Including suburbs of Elmwood Park, River Grove, Schiller Park, Franklin Park, North lake, and parts of Melrose Park.

5th District of Illinois is most of the North side of Chicago and some western and northwest suburbs. It includes Schiller Park, Franklin Park, River Grove, Elmwood Park, Northlake, and Melrose Park. Wrigley Field is located in this district, along with the Chicago neighborhoods of Lakeview, Uptown, and Lincoln Park.
