CNN: [CNN's chief medical correspondent, Sanjay] Gupta approached about surgeon general post (Huh?)
The Deseret News / The Associated Press ^ | January 6, 2009

President-elect Barack Obama has approached CNN's chief medical correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, to be the country's next surgeon general, the cable news network said Tuesday.

CNN said it has kept Gupta from reporting on health care policy and other matters involving the incoming Obama administration since learning he was under consideration for the post.

Two Democrats with knowledge of the discussions over the surgeon general spot said Gupta was under consideration but cautioned there was not yet a final decision on who would fill the post. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media on the matter.

Obama's transition office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Gupta hosts "House Call" on CNN, contributes reports to CBS News, and writes a column for Time magazine. He is a neurosurgeon and is on the faculty at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. During the Clinton administration, he was a White House fellow and special adviser to then-first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Even though the Surgeon General job is largely symbolic, this nomination makes no sense at all.

Another thread going with this information.

But I wanted to state here too, this is the guy who advised Hillary on her Universal Health Care and in Feb of 08 was whining about how California voted down socialized medicine.

Dr. Gupta, despite being yet another Hillary staffer, is a real doc, a neurosurgeon by training. When embedded with the Navy's "Devil Docs" in 2003, he performed five brain surgeries.

But politically he's still a Hillarite.

Roe Conn on WLS Chicago just commented that the events over the past several days make him feel like he’s dreaming, and he’s going to wake up and say, “Honey, I just had the strangest dream — Sanjay Gupta was going to be the Surgeon General!”

Brilliant Neurosurgeon who routinely ditches the mic and camera for gloves and a scalpel when he runs into catastrophically wounded american soldiers on the battlefield, while covering wars.

“Jesus Vidana was still alive, but dying, in the middle of an FRSS just outside Baghdad when a team of heroic doctors and nurses descended on him. Quickly, a breathing tube was placed in him, and he was given back some of the precious blood that was now soaking the sand where he had been shot.

As a neurosurgeon, I was asked to step back from my journalist’s role to look at his gunshot wound to the head. Shortly thereafter, I was removing a bullet from his brain. Within an hour, Jesus had been treated, operated on and was recovering just outside the operating room.

In all the years I have worked in hospitals, I have never seen resources mobilized so quickly and health care workers move with such purpose. And, remember, it was a tent in the middle of the desert by the dark of night in the most dangerous place on Earth.

I wouldn’t be telling you this story if Jesus hadn’t survived and done well.

He is a handsome young man who is considering a career in physical therapy and still trying to reconcile his brush with death. I visited him last year in Southern California and his mother slowly walked over to me and took my hands and said simply, “Thank you.”

I still remember looking over at my producer Stephanie Smith and watching her begin to cry, which of course made me cry as well. This story, though, is more than a story about one Marine who lived, when so many thought he would die. It is about the remarkable technology and brilliant thinking that has brought the wounded of this war to doctors and nurses faster than ever before. This is a story about brave men and women who risk their lives every day so they might save others.”

Well, before you give him a gold star, you'd be hard-pressed to keep a surgeon away from any interesting surgery, and there are a lot of veteran battle surgeons who deserve your admiration more. Gupta sounds like a dilettante

If I were Prez, I would appoint some homeless person to the post and brag about giving someone a job he/she could easily handle— which is nothing at all. Just abolish the damn thing.

I don’t know that it makes no sense at all. He’s a doctor, a neurosurgeon. The main job of the surgeon general is to communicate with the American people on health-related matters. Why would a doctor who is accustomed to communicating (through TV, print media) be an illogical pick? It’s not as if he’s just someone who plays a doctor on TV. He actually is a doctor.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense but Gupta has a good reputation as a surgeon and routinely steps in to operate on soldiers.

I heard this hours ago.

But only now -- after googling for photos -- do I realize that it's not about Depak Chopra.

If it weren't for the cleft in Depak's chin, they could be related.

Hmm, well, he is quite photogenic - that seems to be THE prerequisite for public service according to the dems.

That’s just dumb. The guy is a well qualified surgeon, who understands how to get his message across.

I thought we supported people who were qualified to hold their position.

I do think many here are bitching for bitching sake.

I'd never seen Sanjay Gupta, and figured they were the same guy.

BTW, Sanjay is planning on staying in office a long time:
