No Bailout (Or Obama) Needed: Sales Soar 10.8 Percent at Walgreens
Republican Liberty Caucus ^ | 1/7/2009 | Historicus and Publicola

Drugstore operator/retailer Walgreen Co. said Monday its sales rose 10.8 percent in December, with sales at its older stores growing as consumers stocked up on necessities.

The company reported $6.11 billion revenue in December, up from its $5.51 billion total in December 2007. Walgreen said its same-store sales, or sales at locations open at least one year rose 4.9 percent.

Sales at older pharmacies increased 8.5 percent, and sales at the front end of those rose grew 0.4 percent. Front-end sales refers to sales of nonprescription products.

Same-store sales are considered a key measurement of retailer health because they compare results at older stores and exclude newly opened locations.

Some good news here -- and not totally unexpected.

In tough economic times I would expect to see sales of luxuries and big-ticket items to decline dramatically -- while sales of everyday necessities are solid (at best) or flat (at worst).

Walgreens is great. Not the cheapest but they are on every corner and the stuff they sell is first rate. Time is money and I think they know it. Glad to see someone is bucking the trend.

Yes, I own Walgreens stock!

Exactly. This is not GOOD economic news. It's a spike because people are stocking and, in this case, buying Christmas stuff.

The unions won't like this. The dimocRATS will have to find a way to get their “fare” share of the profits.

Walgreen's have built some locations in inner-city neighborhoods. Inner-city residents lack transporation to go to a regular grocery store so they buy their purchases at Walgreen's.

Also Walgreen's has locations on heavy traffic corners too.

I haven't. Thanks for the heads up. I like the convenience of being able to shop close to home so I don't have to waste time driving to big box stores.

Obama has a plan to unionize all the non-union shops and it’s not card check. They’ve abandoned card check in favor of binding arbitration. Of course, the arbitrators will be pro union, SEIU union that is.

The SEIU is to the Democrat party, what the AFL-CIO is to the Mafia.

Don’t get me wrong the local stores are great - but the online division appears to be run by complete and total morons. :)

I have been shopping there more lately. If you use their coupon book as well as manufacturer coupons when something is on sale, the deals are pretty good, sometimes free. They also offer 10% to you if you receive any rebate money on a Walgreen’s giftcard. My daughter told me about this and it has saved us a bundle.

I was planning on going there today, good bargains, and I just realized I didn’t cash my register rewards. They expired last week - $11 worth. Grrr.
