Reversing themselves, Senate Democratic leaders on Wednesday morning opened the door to allowing Roland W. Burris to replace President-elect Barack Obama in the Senate.

After a private 45-minute meeting with the former Illinois state attorney general, Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, and Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Senate Democrat, said that they were open to recognizing Mr. Burris’s appointment as long as he meets a series of conditions.

LOL .... talk about Catch 22. Dear leader must be aggravated with it all and gave the word .. the fix is in. But this guarantees continuing coverage of all the IL scandals, including his, for the foreseeable future. Too rich.

You have no idea of what you've gotten yourself into, Mr. O.

The condition about the IL panel’s approval is improper. He is appointed (and the SOS has a duty to sign). He is entitled to his seat. Subsequent undertakings regarding the governor’s ethics are another matter.

The "path" is called the 17th Amendment:

When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

I’m already sick of the spin over the fact that he will be seated. The sentate hasn’t “decided” to seat him, they don’t have any choice.

It's a cloudy situation because of the politics, in DC and IL, but I still think they'll 'fix' it, somehow. And you have to believe the new prez would have a powerful say. It's too damaging a way to start the new admin. But we shall see. Whatta farce.

Might I say that, as a resident of Illinois, I have been Constitutionally agrieved by Msrrs. Reid and Durbin.

To negotiate any conditions on Mr. Burris seat is extra-constitutional and no-less-illegal and unPatriotic than what our Governor was attempting to do with the same appointment.

...as long as he meets a series of conditions.

Completely unconstitutional. The 17th Amendment does not allow the Senate to make any "conditions".

This is a fluff article intended to "soften" the blow by making Reid look like he matters. In this case he simply doesn't. The law trumps Reid's little games.

The more the Democrats try to spin this appointment, the more stupid they look. They cannot stop digging the hole deeper.

It was absolutely amazing to hear Burris close his press conference with these words; “Now just let me get in office so I can raise some money-—pause...to pay for all of the things we have been doing.”

Folks, that is what makes a salary under $200K worth millions.

Reid to Burrus:Now you know, we have good evidence that you're the one that ground down Judge Smales golf shoes on that polisher over there at Bushwood Country Club. Now don't deny it, boy!

Why don’t they just give Burris 3/5 of a vote?

He knows if he serves one day in the Senate, he will have a lifetime pension and free health care for life, too. Where can any of us go to work for one day and receive lifetime benefits? Congress has been very generous in voting their own pay raises and benefits plans.

Sad.

A selected-not-elected non-entity selected by a felonious Democrat Governor in Illinois, rejected then accepted by the club in DC, now shows how the Democrats are a corrupt, race-conscious, addled party full of hacks with no real vision for America but just a lust for power at all costs.

You have already been assaulted by a bogus Governor selecting a nincompoop. You should be shouting from the rooftops demanding a special election for this seat. No way should this guy serve for 2 whole years.
