WYANDOTTE, Mich. (AP) -- Members of the Wyandotte Marching Chiefs high school band plan to perform in the inaugural parade in Washington, but they won't be known by the name they've had since the 1950s.

The Detroit Free Press reports Thursday that the band from Roosevelt High School will perform as the Roosevelt High School Marching Band. Patches will be sewn over logos on band uniform sleeves and the band's Marching Chiefs banner won't be carried.

The decision was in response to a letter from a group that opposes the use of American Indian nicknames and logos.

sorta gives a new meaning to the term, "namedropping."

But not to worry! Barack Obama has found his name.

So it's sort of a wash.

Wonder what would happen if they called themselves, say, the “Wyandotte Marching Mulattos?”

Imagine, a group on the right complaining about something and the left doing exactly what they asked, almost too choked up to respond.

This high school should have stood it’s ground. What kind of a message are they sending to their students?

1. we were wrong to use this name
2. we were racists when we did it.
3. we should capitulate when someone criticizes us
4. we should not stand up to those who criticize us
5. we should hide who we are, because we are vile people

Good grief!

Why don’t they just climb onto a tree and hang themselves in shame? Seems nothing less will be sufficient in this PC world we live in....

They could call themselves the “Marching Dudes”, but that would be discriminatory against women.

So they could change that to “Marching People”. But that is insensitive to people who can’t march. Also, “marching” evokes images of warfare.

A good alternative would be “those people over there”, but that is intolerant to other species. As though only human beings are worthy of being noticed.

Henceforth, when referring to the Michigan band, you should just sort of point your fingers and grunt.

That might be considered offensive to neanderthals. How insensitive of you.

Oh right. Enhancing their victim status doesn't generate Democrat votes. How silly of me.

Although the word "chief" in American English has become widely associated with indigenous Americans, the word is actually much older than the white people's arrival in America. It is derived from the Latin word "kaput," which meant "head."

"chief" is derived from Latin and French, which explains why it is so similar to "chef," which is short for "chef de cuisine," meaning "head of the kitchen."

the use of American Indian nicknames and logos

I agree, these should not be used. Why honor defeated, aboriginal people in this modern day?
