Naomi Klein: Enough. It's time for a boycott (As was done to stop Apartheid in South Africa)
Guardian ^ | 10 January 2009 | Naomi Klein

Posted on 01/09/2009 7:32:06 PM PST by GOPGuide

It's time. Long past time. The best strategy to end the increasingly bloody occupation is for Israel to become the target of the kind of global movement that put an end to apartheid in South Africa. In July 2005 a huge coalition of Palestinian groups laid out plans to do just that. They called on "people of conscience all over the world to impose broad boycotts and implement divestment initiatives against Israel similar to those applied to South Africa in the apartheid era". The campaign Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions was born.

Every day that Israel pounds Gaza brings more converts to the BDS cause - even among Israeli Jews. In the midst of the assault roughly 500 Israelis, dozens of them well-known artists and scholars, sent a letter to foreign ambassadors in Israel. It calls for "the adoption of immediate restrictive measures and sanctions" and draws a clear parallel with the anti-apartheid struggle. "The boycott on South Africa was effective, but Israel is handled with kid gloves ... This international backing must stop."

Yet even in the face of these clear calls, many of us still can't go there. The reasons are complex, emotional and understandable. But they simply aren't good enough. Economic sanctions are the most effective tool in the non-violent arsenal: surrendering them verges on active complicity. Here are the top four objections to the BDS strategy, followed by counter-arguments.

Punitive measures will alienate rather than persuade Israelis.

The world has tried what used to be called "constructive engagement". It has failed utterly. Since 2006 Israel has been steadily escalating its criminality: expanding settlements, launching an outrageous war against Lebanon, and imposing collective punishment on Gaza through the brutal blockade.

I wonder if any relatives of hers voted for ol' Adolf in 1933 Germany

(Oh, and how is South Africa doing these days?...)

I want the names of the individuals, corporations, and countries affiliated with such a boycott. If they want a boycott, they will get one.

“....Israel pounds Gaza”. No mention of the 10,000 rockets launched from Gaza in to Israel. STFU Naomi.

Let’s say this works. Let’s say Israel is hounded and bullied into withdrawing back to the Green Line.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE ROCKETS FALL AGAIN?

Does this pious, fradulent posturing take into account the deep, irrational, pathetic hatred the Arabs have of Israel? Is the self-satisfied Ms. Klein, and the other leftist wretches who still deny Marxism ever got anyone killed, going to demand any moral reciprocation on the part of the Arabs?

Get thee to Gaza City, Ms. Klein, and don’t piss and moan when they force you to veil and shut up in public.

“South Africa worked a treat, ay. So did Rhodesia.”

Yes it did, there are now more Rhodesians and Afrikaners in Australia and Britain than Johanesburg.

Perth had better get ready take in a wave of Israeli refugees if Naomi ever gets her way.

I don’t support her cause but I support boycotts as a means of political action.

Bring it on!

"I want the names of the individuals, corporations, and countries affiliated with such a boycott. If they want a boycott, they will get one."

There are some religious institutions calling in various ways for members (especially those in business) to divest from Israeli interests. And I'm sure that there are many more than what you see in the following list.

"Among those churches which are not members of the WCC, the most notable is the Roman Catholic Church (RCC). Since 1965 a Joint Working Group (JWG), co-sponsored by the WCC and the RCC, has met regularly to discuss issues of common interest and promote cooperation. The group meets annually. One of the church and ecumenical relations staff members serves as co-secretary for the JWG and helps to coordinate contact between the Council and the dicasteries of the Vatican through the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity. [And] . . . Though the Roman Catholic Church is not a member of the WCC, it is a full member of the Faith & Order Commission. The RCC also serves the team on Mission & Evangelism in a consultative capacity."

And there are two major US political parties working against Israel, so I'm now "unaffiliated."

We’ll take ‘em here. There’s not enough Jews in NZ.

What a childish mentality she has. Did she ever study basic history or current events?

Or has to much of the dark side of the left crept in?

Drop her is Gaza. Maybe she can convince the Mohammedans that since her faith is leftism, they should ignore her heritage, just as she had.

Hmm...perhaps they could boycott the firing of missiles into Israel?

That would be a nice start to the whole “ no exports into Israel” thingy..

This must be an upside-down/inside-out world we live in. To so many people, the good are bad and the bad are good.

If God and Satan were physical and we were capable of interacting with them like any other being, this Naomi Klein would be on the side of Satan.

Little Miss Priss Klein needs to go live in Israel for a few years - particularly in those areas hardest hit with Hamas rockets over the years... See if she still feels that way.

It is so amazing how these snobbish idiots think they know the answers to the world’s ills, yet all they really know is where to buy cocaine on a cold night...

So sad.
