In an exchange with Paul Krugman, political scientist Alan Abramowitz made one of the best cases I've heard for, as Krugman put it, "thinking the Trumpthinkable." At some point, Abramowitz argued, pundits need to admit that Trump has a good chance of winning the Republican presidential nomination. But that remains a minority viewpoint. Nate Silver, for instance, published a piece arguing that analysts extrapolating forward from Trump's current (and impressively durable) poll lead are likely to be disappointed. So I called Abramowitz and asked him to walk me through his argument in more detail. (snip)...... I saw what Nate Silver...

If we could get a sneak peek at Barack Obama’s secret diary, this is what we might read.) I’ll have to endorse Hillary if she gets the nomination—which looks almost certain now—but I won’t have my heart in it. When I leave office in little over a year, I’ll be one of the youngest ex-presidents in history. I’ll still have that same big-shouldered Chicago lust for power that drove me from Greenwood Avenue in Hyde Park to Pennsylvania Avenue in three short years. But if Hillary replaces me in the Oval, she and Bill will take control of the Democratic...

NEW YORK As former Sectary of State Hillary Clinton prepares to testify before the House Select Committee on Benghazi, new documentary evidence of a secret State Department gun-running operation is adding fuel to the controversy over the Department of Justice prosecution of arms dealer Marc Turi. As might be expected in this era of partisan rancor, my new book, Unlikeable: The Problem With Hillary, has prompted criticism by people on the Left. Much of the criticism can be traced back to Hillarys notorious attack machine and the henchmen who run that machine: Hillarys book-burning spokesman Philippe Reines (Killing books has always been a fun pastime, Reines once bragged).1 Her Get Smart secret agent Sidney Blumenthal, an expert in political wet work Her Reich Minister of Propaganda, David Brock, of whom the less said the better. The U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, actually served as a meeting place to coordinate aid for the rebel-led insurgencies in the Middle East, according to Middle Eastern security officials. Among the tasks performed inside the building was collaborating with Arab countries on the recruitment of fighters including jihadists to target Bashar al-Assads regime in Syria. The distinction may help explain why there was no major public security presence at what has been described as a consulate. Such a presence would draw attention to the shabby, nondescript building that was allegedly used for such sensitive purposes. [snip] The...

Speaking of things that the European crisis is not about, while I was in Germany, my colleague Robert Samuelson wrote that Europes turmoil is more than a currency crisis and was inevitable, in some form, even if the euro had never been created. Its ultimately a crisis of the welfare state, which has grown too large to be easily supported economically. snipIn a broad sense, I dont think the crisis in Europe is really even about debt. Its about the interplay of slow growth, heavy debts and weak institutions. But its really not about welfare states.

Whats also important, but not evident, on this chart is that Obamas major expenses were temporary the stimulus is over now while Bushs were, effectively, recurring. The Bush tax cuts didnt just lower revenue for 10 years. Its clear now that they lowered it indefinitely, which means this chart is understating their true cost. Similarly, the Medicare drug benefit is costing money on perpetuity, not just for two or three years. And Boehner, Ryan and others voted for these laws and, in some cases, helped to craft and pass them. To relate this specifically to the debt-ceiling...

    The Truth About Guns ^ | 12 July, 2011 | Daniel Zimmerman
Senator Lori Klein, our Irresponsible Gun Owner of the Day today, took the time to call me back to give TTAG her version of what happened when writer Richard Ruelas and a photographer interviewed her recently. You probably wont be surprised that the Senator told me that what was portrayed in the story wasnt an entirely accurate description of what happened First, the Senator is, in her own words, mortified by what happened. She describes herself as a life-long gun owner and 2A supporter. Her father started teaching her how to safely use a gun at age five. And...

Time magazine's Joe Klein this weekend claimed President Obama has a better relationship with the military than George W. Bush did when he was Commander-in-Chief. Such hypocritically was said on "The Chris Matthews Show" just moments before Klein noted that the military were "very much opposed" to attacking Libya (snip) JOE KLEIN, TIME MAGAZINE: The other thing is theres still tension between [President Obama] and Petraeus about what exactly, how exactly to close out Afghanistan. I'd say the relationship is pretty good, very, better than it was with Bush

Ezra Klein, the founder of journolist, proves yet again why whatever the Washington Post is paying him is much too much: Heres your out-of-the-box policy idea for the day: America should implement weighted voting to make voting more objective and fair, and give the young more power, because the consequences of political decisions will affect them the longest.
  • Time Magazine's Joe Klein: Qur'an-burning an "act as murderous as any suicide bomber's"

Jones, of course, killed no one. Suicide bombers kill as many people as they can for Allah. But Joe Klein is by no means alone in assuming that Muslims cannot control themselves and respond to insult with anything but threats and murder, and thus cannot be held responsible for their own actions. He thus reveals again the multicultural Left's bigotry and ethnocentrism. "Joe Klein Reserves Spot in Hell for Koran-burning Pastor Who's As 'Murderous' As 'Suicide Bombers,'" by Ken Shepherd for NewsBusters, April 4 (thanks to James): Burning a copy of the Koran is morally equivalent to flying a plane...

The reason these top-down solutions dont work is simple. The people up top dont know as much as the folks down below. In the case of health care, the people down below are physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and other medical personnel. Most have advanced degrees in medicine or health care management and have years of experience. They know far more about health care than the up-top people such as politicians, HHS bureaucrats and precocious Washington Post policy wonks. It doesnt take the down-below people long to figure out how to game the system after the up-top people reform the system.

On the January 23 World News Sunday, ABC News Senior Washington Editor Rick Klein used President Obamas euphemism for spending as "investments" as he and anchor Dan Harris discussed how Republicans will likely respond to Tuesdays State of the Union Address. Although the setup piece by correspondent David Kerley did allude to Obamas word choice to call his plan "cut and invest" as having significance, noting that it "worries Republicans," after the piece had ended, Klein used the term "investments" as if it were straight, nonpartisan terminology. Klein: But when you get down to the policy, the President talking about
