Obama Reiterates Policy of Engagement With Iran
New York Times ^ | January 11, 2009 | Brian Knowlton

WASHINGTON — After focusing on the ailing economy, President-elect Barack Obama stepped into some of the hottest foreign policy issues this weekend, confirming a clear policy of engagement with Iran, vowing to press immediately for Middle East peace and saying flatly that “we are going to close Guantanamo.”

Speaking on ABC’s “This Week,” Mr. Obama reiterated his intention to work directly with Iran — a country whose president has called for Israel’s destruction — to improve relations and halt a nuclear program that Tehran describes as peaceful but which the West believes is not.

But he added that Iran would be “one of our biggest challenges,” and one that required fresh thinking.

“We are going to have to take a new approach,” he said to the program host, George Stephanopoulos. “My belief is that engagement is the place to start.”

Mr. Obama said he wanted to adopt “a new emphasis on respect and a new willingness on being willing to talk” to the Iranians, while making it clear “that we also have certain expectations.”

The talk of a message of respect suggested a clear departure from the often pointed and deprecatory rhetoric that has prevailed between President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and President Bush, even though he has consistently differentiated between his feelings about Iran’s leader and that country’s people.

Punk like him would have been a Jag officer and would never of gone out of the eastern seaboard.
I’ve met hundreds of them I’d like to have walk the plank in the middle of the Pacific.
I use to work at the pentagon whilst in the Army.
After two years I went to mil. personnel and asked to get the hell out of the puzzle palace. 70,000 plus Bozos and ten folks actually working.

Let’s not all go off the deep end. He still sleeps with the testosterone in the family and a wrong move could get him Jesse-Jacksoned.

>>If he had even been in the military, he would have been fragged.<<

He’s worse than a 2nd Lt. trying to command a Brigade.

Obama is setting himself up to be a one-term President...obviously clueless on dealing with Islamic Terrorist States.

He's clueless on all fronts.

One term at most. He runs on pure ego. That ego is one hungry little animal and it feeds nonstop on the idolotry of his worshipers. Job hung in there because he was a true Believer and his was the One true and just God of the Faithful. Zero is not a god or a savior, and his followers are not faithful; they're hopeful. BIG difference. Faith is planting a seed and believing it will grow. Hope is wishing someone would bring you a plant.

His own will turn on him from the gate when the pretty horse on which they wagered everything fails to deliver on the promise. Midterms are going to be a disaster for this congress and they know it. Bambi promised change? Wait until the day after the election.

The question is whether they admit to themselves that they've created a monster in this guy and are willing to go toe to toe with him. They have nothing to lose by doing so. Congressfolk make lifelong careers of DC; Presidents have 4 or 8 year temporary jobs. If they rein him in, they score points with the people and maybe save themselves. If not, everybody loses.

“Prefident”

Actually, as applies to Barry the Rookie, proper title should be “’Present’ Elect”

Spot on. Great analogy!

Congress got re-elected with just a 9% approval rating.

How is that possible? 91% disapprove of congress but sustained the Democrat majority?

We have a severe disconnect of reality. I’m not sure the press will let their guy or his congress go down the tubes.

I would like Obama to achieve peace, love and understanding with the fanatical, angry maniacs of the cult of death, but I think their hate is just too much for that to happen. And they hate Obama too.

I am with you there. I am my boss but I would have CANNED my sorry underperforming—make that NOT PERFORMING AT ALL—behind when my “approval” (we call that “productivity” where I work) rating hit 95% and I suspect—HOPE—my employees would have staged an insurrection before that.

9%? Huh? That’s like getting two rolls of pennies from the bank and finding out that 91 of them are slugs.

NO NO NO NO NO! It’s WORSE than THAT!

Re-electing “EMPLOYEES” who have a 9% approval/productivity rating is like walking into the bank and ASKING for 91 slugs and 9 pennies in exchange for your dollar, and then watching as the teller counts them out and slides them across the counter to you, and THEN saying, “GEEEEEEEEEE! THANKS!”

Obama to step into it literally.

Obama to Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran ...”I know there must be a Peaceful resolution to your war against the Jews”

Terrorists to Obama “Peace, No Peace..”

Obama to Nations of Terror “Well what is that you want the Jews to do?”

Terrorist nations to Obama “Die, DIE.... DIE.....”

The Milquetoast wing of the Obama party is about to sell the U.S. out. Once they rape the military as they complain that budgeting for Defense is killing the economy it will be near impossible for us to sustain our satus as a world power.

Break up of the U.S. will be inevitable.

C’mon now, I heard just this morning a comparison between 0 and Eisenhower inasmuch as each took over from a weak administration and, due to their popularity, rose to power and esteem.
