Bush opened up his final press conference by telling the White House press corps that he respected and appreciated working with them.
"I see a lot of faces that travel with me around the world, to places like Afghanistan and Iraq and Africa," Bush said.
I see some new faces, which goes to show theres some turnover in this business," he continued.
Bush told the press corps that sometimes they "mis-underestimated" him. And sometimes, he said, "I didnt like the stories you wrote."
"Mostly, Im interested in saying thank you for the job," Bush said.
During the press conference, over about 15 questions, issues came up that will define the Bush presidency: Sept. 11, Iraq, Katrina, and the economy.
There were revealing moments, like Bush admitting that the Mission Accomplished banner was a mistake. (Alert Frank Rich!). Not having weapons of mass destruction was a significant disappointment, Bush also said, following the question of mistakes.
But at times, Bush vigorously defended his administration, his role in providing security to the nation, and Americas position in the world. He defended invading Iraq, bringing up resolution 1441, criticized elites, and regarding the federal response to Katrina, Bush said that it should be remembered that 30,000 were rescued off roofs.
Serious matters aside, Bush joked around the with the press corps, too, such as mentioning how CNNs Suzanne Malveaux now pronounces her first name. And calling on ABCs new chief White House correspondent Jake Tapperseated in the front row, next to Helen ThomasBush asked what hed been doing since covering the 2000 race. Tapper said that hed been working [his] way to this chair.
Chris Matthews, immediately after, aptly summed up Bushs last moments in the briefing room: That is one historic press conference.

I assume there was no thrill running up Chrissy's leg...
...sir, may I have another?
Sorriest spectacle of his whole term...especially when the Compost Asshat spoke up...awful...
The press is now in the business of giving the presidency to the candidate they like the best.
Is it good manners to thank a pack of liars?
Shameless ba$tard$ and they know who they are.
Ann Compton at the top of my ess list. What a b*tch.
Symbolic of his entire Presidency. Bush has allowed serious damage to the Office of the President by allowing and tacitly condoning public disrespect for him as President from the press and the democrats. What a monumental disappointment the man turned out to be.
I’m sorry, Mr. President, but I would have lost some of that charm and simply said Thanks for nothing you bunch of liars.
Eight years later he still doesn’t get it, still can’t identify or deal with the enemy.
“Mostly, Im interested in saying thank you for the job,” Bush said.”
He got jobbed alright...and allowed it...his snappy comeback to that pretentious btch Suze-AHN Mal-VOWE was the toughest he ever got with these vicious turds...what a limp wristed whimper to end on...
It won't be "Thank You" but it'll be close to it.
Well said regarding his failure to vigorously defend himself and by extension, the Office of the President.
He was weakened in the eyes of foreign governments because of this.
Thank you also to Pelosi, Reid, Gore, et al...
If Bush were speaking as a private person, sure. But he also has responsibilities as President of our country, which are far more important than his private feelings, and this kind of behavior sadly neglects his duty to the country.
The press and Obama, their chosen candidate, are determined to wreck our country, though lies and manipulation and corrupt behavior, and it's not Bush's job to help them do it.
I've found myself raising this issue numerous times. Bush is a decent guy, and he is determined to do the right thing, but he just doesn't seem to have the smallest CLUE what his duties are as President when it comes to dealing with political enemies. Because they are not just HIS enemies, they are our country's enemies.
What did you want him to say...? “Fu%# You”?
I could not watch this spectacle this morning. I knew Bush would continue his “reach across the isle” to these hyenas.
And of course he seems to need to continue to list his failures, much to the delight of the liberal press.
He has the ‘too nice’ disease. There is a time to stand up to evil, and doing so does not make one less of a Christian.
I hope for a strong, unapologetic conservative to hold the Presidency, after Zero has tarnished the office for 4 years. We need a real conservative.

“The press is now in the business of giving the presidency to the candidate they like the best.”
And the dumb-ass voters accept it......
“It won’t be “Thank You” but it’ll be close to it.”
Hahahahaha. Meaning two words, the second one “you” right?
