Gay bishop to kickoff Obama inauguration

A gay Anglican bishop, Gene Robinson, is to give the opening prayer at festivities to kick off US president-elect Barack Obama's inauguration, the organising committee says.
The selection of Robinson for the opening party on Sunday came after weeks of criticism over Obama's choice of conservative pastor Rick Warren to deliver the religious invocation on Tuesday, January 20, the day Obama is sworn in to office.
Robinson, who is the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Communion, will pray at the star-studded event to be broadcast on national television from the Lincoln Memorial on January 18, the inaugural committee said in a statement.
"Our intention is to root the event in history, celebrating the moments when our nation has united to face great challenges and prevail," said executive producer George Stevens.
"We will combine historical readings by prominent actors with music from an array of the greatest stars of today."

The event is to include musical performances by artists including Beyonce, Mary J Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Herbie Hancock, John Mellencamp, Usher, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder.
Readings were to be done by Martin Luther King III, a relative of the slain civil rights leader; as well as actors Jamie Foxx, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington.

You know change is in the air when a Presidential inauguration is accompanied by performances from The Beastie Boys, Jay-Z, Elvis Costello and Anti-Flag. On 20 January, America will enjoy an almighty street party when Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.
Of course, none of the above artists are actually playing at the ceremony, but they’ll be stirring up the festive mood around town. The Beasties are headlining a concert called ‘Hey, America Feels Kinda Cool Again’, alongside that other hellraiser Sheryl Crow (woo, yeah!). Not a band used to celebrating political achievement, Anti-Flag will be doing their version of an inaugural ball in DC with Darkest Hour and United Nations.
The Big Kahuna, though, will be at Lincoln Memorial and broadcast by HBO. The guest-list includes Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock and other not-insignificant players. Mr Obama, it appears you have some fans.

Communist band opens for Obama
'How many of 75,000 came to hear music?'
A hip rock band that features the Soviet national anthem and communist-inspired lyrics was on stage to open for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama at his record-breaking Portland, Ore., rally that attracted 75,000.
The Decemberists, a Portland-based group with a large local following, also closed the May 18 event.
The Decemberists typically begin their concerts with a Russian-language recording of the USSR's national anthem.
A YouTube video shows the Decemberists beginning an April 31, 2007, concert at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa., with the anthem.
"Decemberists" refers to an uprising at Senate Square in St. Petersburg Dec. 14, 1825, when a group of Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in protest as Nicholas I assumed the throne, after Czar Alexander died without an heir.
The Decemberists have posed for publicity photos in period Russian costumes with the red flag of the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 waving behind them.

A group of ultra-moonbats from the Encephalophobic Left has launched the "Underground Action Alliance," founded by something called "Anti-Flag". Its main activity seems to be to recruit punk musicians to fight against the military and to sponsor the "Military Free Zone" campaign. They and their punksters want to define areas in which reps of the military are prohibited from exercising their free speech or speaking to teenagers about joining up. The UAA moonbats claim that there is a clear and present danger that the military will "violate young people’s privacy and aid the military in predatory recruitment practices." They prefer that teenagers listen to punk music, while ingesting recreational substances.
A "predatory recruitment practice" evidently consists of suggesting to a teenager that he or she might want to serve his or her country while getting some job experience that will fatten up the resume.
