Lawmakers used the meeting of President-elect Barack Obama and Mexican President Felipe Calderon today to file legislation in the Senate and House to reduce drug-related violence on the U.S.-Mexico border.
The bill, introduced by Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., and Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, would provide $30 million over two years to expand the Justice Departments "Project Gunrunner Initiative" that targets gun-smuggling networks.
"The increasing violence in Mexico is now a U.S. national security issue," Hutchison said.
In addition to Bingaman and Hutchison, Arizona Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl, both Republicans, also signed on to the legislation .
A similar version of the bill was filed in the House by Rep. Ciro Rodriguez, D-San Antonio.
Rodriguez said gun-running into Mexico remains a problem in the fight against drug cartels.
Border lawmakers were able to get some funding the gunrunning initiative last year.
Full funding would allow the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to hire and train an additional 80 agents.
Gun runners ping!
If you want on, or off this S. Texas/Mexico ping list, please FReepMail me.
Another dim bulb finds a worm.
Wow. I am like, SO impressed, you know?
A law to stop the gun smuggling. Like, totally awesome, Dude.
—fix the border—
Arizona Sens. Juan McCain and Jon Kyl, both Republicans, also signed on to the legislation.
Sounds fine...unless they decide everyday Americans are 'smugglers' just because they can't provide a paper trail for a gun.
Mexico has never been a friend of our United States.
Based on old pesos!
The looters of Mexico want to have the freedom to loot
America.
After spending several years starting oil exploration
crews for Pemex, I think I have The reason Mexico has
become so bad.
I like the Mexican people in the fly over parts of Mexico.
The mid level and workers of Pemex are good.
It is the government and the high up in Pemex that are the
vultures and looters.
The peso was about 8 cents (12.5 to a dollar).
When Pemex found the sito grande, a very large oil pool
that covers parts of the states of Chiapas and Tabasco
also a long ways into the Gulf of Mexico.
Pemex borrowed billions to produce this great oil find.
The looters (government) stole most of the money and
what they did buy was junk oil rigs and drill pipe, etc.
1,000 pesos which was worth about $80 now will not buy
a coke (old pesos).
This was due to the looters stealing billions from the
Mexican people.
Instead of overthrowing the looters the Mexican people
had an out, they had no weapons and they could cross
into America and have a much safer life.
This hurts both Mexico and America as Mexico lost some
of its hardest workers.
The gangbangers and welfare frauds also came over from
Mexico as they could rape and pillage at will.
The government of Mexico is propped up by the billions
sent back by the illegals and by our government having
borders that are too open.
The only chance I see to help America and Mexico is to
seal the border, deport the people who are not here
legally.
We also need to arm the Mexican people so they can have
a chance against the looters with their armies.
There have been gun runners for decades. So the cure is more gun legislation?
This is MORE TAXPAYER MONEY to stop guns that are ILLEGALLY bought by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in the U.S. and ILLEGALLY smuggled into Mexico.
Just stating the obvious, and preaching to the choir, but a big wall would certainly help in this endeavor — and since the money has already been allocated for its construction, they don’t need more appropriations. Win-win. Too easy, I guess.
See #12. Just throwing your money at it.
I live in CA....I’ve been shouting this junk from the rooftops for years...
My post was SARCASM...
I’m sorry, you threw me with the Dude, Gramma.
These people? have been in DC for years. They created this problem, and their answer is to hire another 80 BATF agents?
!Idiotas!
I’m sorry, too for the misunderstanding...
They HAVE created this problem...and we get to live with it.
HunkyDory, isn’t it.
The true goal, somehow, is to use this Mexican drug war to take our personal battleworthy guns.
If something is illegal, you make it illegaler and illegar until it's illegalest, and then it becomes effective.

I think it's time for a new keyboard. ;)
