“Mountain waves” : Mountains in Antarctica can help destroy ozone layer

In a new research, it has been observed that “mountain waves” in the atmosphere above Antarctica create rare clouds that are helping destroy the ozone layer.

Over the last two decades, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) released by human activity have opened a hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica.

Key chemical reactions that lead to ozone depletion happen on the surface of rare polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), which form high up in the atmosphere.

Here, sunlight breaks down the CFCs into products that react to produce chlorine, which in turn decomposes ozone.

“The question was: how are these clouds generated?” said Lars Hoffmann of the Julich Research Centre in Germany.

According to a report in New Scientist, Steve Eckermann of the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC, along with Hoffmann and colleagues, used satellite infrared data to study atmospheric temperatures above the Antarctic Peninsula.

They found pockets of high and low temperature air in the stratosphere, and these only occurred above mountains.

The colder pockets fell below -78 degrees Celsius, which is cold enough for PSCs to form.

This implicates so-called mountain waves, which are created when an airstream flows over high relief.

The waves churn up the air high in the atmosphere and appear to create the temperature variations. (ANI)

I’m still looking for the evidence of a mechanism that carries the CFCs (which are heavier than air at sea level) to the stratosphere.

Chlorine decomposes into O3?

Atmospheric alchemy.

I suggest the Miskatonic Institute send a team to study this.

Chlorine decomposes the O3......but they never tell you how a chemical, CFC, that is waaaaaay heavier than air gets waaaaay UP there to the stratosphere to do the damage, and just how it got to the Antarctic in the first place.............

Yes. For the children... and the cute little puppies.

But not cats! They’re on their own.

Penguins use A LOT of air conditioning... AND spray deodorant.

Oh, and it’s carried upward into the atmosphere in small balsa-wood boxes hanging by threads from foil helium balloons, launched by whales.

You DID call for silliness, din’t you?

Oh, I’m sorry, I mis-read your first post.

You said it IS getting sillier and siller, not that you wanted it to GET sillier and sillier.

Please ignore my previous post to you.

You might be on to something.

The penguin dances COULD be starting vibrations at frequencies and amplitudes sufficient to MOVE the heavier than air CFCs ALONG the ice and UP the mountain slopes where they are LAUNCHED into the air by the “Mountain Waves” with enough velocity to reach the stratosphere.

Yeah! THAT’S what’s happening.

...little did we know that it was the penguins all along...

All these stupid ‘reports’ show is that we as a species know little to nothing about how mother earth works and survives....and that we are too arrogant and naive to admit it. Instead we have the idiot scientists trying to tell us that “this is the way it is!!”

All recent information indicates that the ozone ‘hole’ is closing, and will be closed completely in 40 years.

But but but... We don’t use CFCs anymore. Didn’t we already ban them and a lot of other nice chemicals that used to keep our shuttle astronauts alive, and prevent malaria, and like that? < whines >

OMGosh! CFCs must be FOREVER! They never go away! Oh, the children and the puppies!

You added an “into” in your statement. They just say it decomposes O3.

I thought about that too, but even if I can't explain that, atmospheric surveys still show that CFCs are present in the stratosphere.

With just a few tens of billions in grant money, we intend to illustrate our pre-formed conclusions that:

Republican Penguins use A LOT of air conditioning... AND spray deodorant.

Oh, and it’s carried upward into the atmosphere in small balsa-wood boxes hanging by threads from foil helium balloons, launched by Republican whales.

It's not silly, anymore. Now it's called 'scientific research'.

Oh yeah, and that Republican walruses drive SUVs.

polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs),

Better known as "nacreous clouds".

If they called them that, however, then they would have to explain WHY they were first noted BEFORE we had CFCs to release...and also explain WHY they ALSO form in the Arctic regions, rather than being only an Antarctic phenomenon.
