Crowd rallies to protect aid programs for California's 'working families'

Nearly 800 advocates for California's "working families" gathered in downtown Sacramento on Tuesday, and they had plenty to talk about.

Deep cuts to programs that fund food and health care and affordable housing for the state's most vulnerable people. Rising unemployment and demand for social services. Alarming school dropout rates.

It was enough to tear Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg away from budget negotiations at the Capitol to rally the group of nonprofit staffers, policymakers and others at the Sacramento Convention Center.

Steinberg, six weeks into his new job, admitted that he has not been getting out much lately.

"I've been mired in trying to solve the most difficult budget challenge in the most difficult economic crisis in my lifetime," he said, admitting that he is humbled by the task. "We have to make sure we do everything we can to protect the vulnerable, and at the same time make the painful decisions required to balance this budget."

Steinberg laid out the centerpiece of his vision for lifting up California's working families. He wants to invest the state's infrastructure dollars to help businesses create "career academies" to train young people for environmentally sound "green" jobs that pay well and offer health, retirement and other benefits.

"The real answer is to create an economic and job base that guarantees decent wages and benefits," he said.

His remarks were met with an ovation.

The folks who take taxes are demanding more from those who pay taxes.

Uh, if they’re working why can’t they buy their own stuff? Isn’t that the point of work?

"The real answer is to create an economic and job base that guarantees decent wages and benefits,"

I wonder how this dweeb proposes to achieve this "real answer?" The one thing I've learned in my 45 years is there are no guarantees. You and you alone are the sole person that is responsible for your own success.

Maybe now would be a good time to give California back to Mexico.

Couple that with the story that were it not for legal (and illegal) immigration, California would be LOSING population due to the exodus of taxpaying citizens, and pretty soon all you'll have left are day laborers, welfare queens, and a couple of Hollywood idiots who long ago established residency in Florida for tax purposes.

God, I'm so glad I got out of that hellhole when I did. California is a lost cause, people. Anyone still left there, get out while you still can.

No, the point of working is to supply Democrats with money.

Why not? They still think it belongs to them. Ask any of the La Raza/MALDEF mouth-breathers, and they'll tell you that they didn't cross the border, the border crossed them. And silly us, we didn't realize that the border has been moving back and forth all the time, not fixed since 1848. What were we thinking?

Please. This is Socialist California. There isn’t any place for your sort of logic and critical thinking.

Yes, the cries for Socialism and a lifelong government teat to suck are being heard in Sacramento.

Don’t worry, with all of the emigration, California will probably return to Mexico by default in 20 years or so.

Pass the word, Tennessee sucks rocks.....

Recently met a fireman from southern California. He said the firemen in his dept. typically work two days a week, and they earn A LOT of money. Some members of the dept. sold their California homes for a tidy profit and moved to Tennessee where they purchased very fine homes and farms with a lot of acreage. And, get this: they fly back and for each week to work at their same jobs in southern California!

‘Working families’ — liberalspeak for people on welfare and people slurping at the public trough.

Yeah, I’m a little north of Chattanooga in a rural area and we’re seeing quite a few folks from CA move into the area. Mostly horse people. I fear that they will bring their liberalism with them and ruin it for all of us.....
