SEATTLE Apple Inc. co-founder and Chief Executive Steve Jobs said Wednesday he is taking a medical leave of absence until the end of June just a week after the cancer survivor tried to assure investors and employees his recent weight loss was simply caused by a treatable hormone deficiency.
Jobs, 53, said in a letter last week that he would remain at Apple's helm despite the hormone deficiency, and said he had already begun the "relatively simple and straightforward" treatment for the problem. But in an e-mail to employees Wednesday, Jobs backtracked.
"During the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought," he wrote.
Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, will take over Jobs' responsibilities while he is on leave.

I hope he gets better. Apple needs Jobs for the next few years.
Did Apple violate SEC disclosure rules by hiding Jobs' illness?
That’s what I was thinking.
.
He's made great products and turned around a company. I wish him well and hope that he's lined up someone to replace him at Apple.
SEC, Shmesh EC!
You wanna talk about someone who’s “wired?”
This might be a good time to short Apple stock, for those so inclined.
You asked — ‘’Did Apple violate SEC disclosure rules by hiding Jobs’ illness?”
Well — “During the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought...”
If a week delay was too long, then perhaps so...
This is not good and I wish him and his family the very best. Thanks for thinking differently Steve! :)

I suspect Jobs/Apple have been misleading people on this subject for many months and not just a week.
I wish him well but that doesn’t mean that I assume he has been forthright with investors in the past X number of months.
The man is dying like mere mortals do sooner than later. I wish him the best... mere mortals do not stay alive to keep a corporate interest doing well.
The real problem here is that our education system has dumbed down the people that could rise to his level. People make me sick anymore. Ugh
Oh well.
people need to leave this man alone and in peace.
“c’mon, he’s had Pancreatic Cancer.”
Please...no one alive today has ever HAD pancreatic cancer. You HAVE it and you die from it. You may last longer than the six months they give you. You may have, as my father did, three years where you are living with it and you may think for a while that this could go on indefinitely. But the day it starts back up, you are 90 days from God’s Green Door.
Steve Jobs knew this and intentionally avoided telling share holders the truth. We may never prove it but the Guy he’s about to meet knows exactly what went on.
Shame on Steve...Shame on Apple.
Enough with the lies people...doesn’t any one ever tell the truth????
It is none of Apple's business how sick he is. And if anyone at Apple knew of his illness, HIPPA laws prohibit an employer from releasing any medical information regarding any employee without the express written consent of the employee.
The only SEC violation would be if Jobs sold off all his stock after he learned he had a serious illness and didn't disclose that fact before he sold it. That would be insider trading.
But Apple is under no obligation to inform the stockholders or any member of the public of the health status of Jobs or any other Apple employee.
I suspect that Jobs (who is a by all accounts a straight shooter) decided to reveal this illness because he plans on dumping some stock in the near future.
I said before, pancreatic cancer is very very fast acting. He unfortunately won’t make it, though we wish he would.
