Barack Obama to end US army's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy towards gays
The Telegraph (UK) ^ | January 14, 2009 | Alex Spillius

The move is expected to be among a series of symbolic changes he will push through quickly to stamp his mark on the presidency.

He is also expected to reverse several controversial executive Bush decisions within days of taking office next week.

Mr Obama has committed to closing the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay and will formally ban all interrogative techniques that could be described as torture, such as waterboarding.

It is expected that he will also reverse Mr Bush's orders restricting the distribution of funds for stem cell research and to overseas groups that offer abortion counselling.

The change of policy on homosexuality will allow gays to serve openly in all branches of the armed forces.

...

Although introduced before he came to power, Mr Bush's refusal to change the "don't ask, don't tell" policy angered many in America.

...Colin Powell, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is among influential figures who have called for the policy to be re-evaluated.

During his campaign Mr Obama often spoke out against what he called Bush's abuse of executive authority.

"I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution," he said in 2007. ...

Note Obama's quotation here:

"I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution," he said in 2007.

I hope the generals are prepping their plans to deal with a 10% reduction in troops because of this policy changing.

A terrible effect on force cohesion and morale. Homosexual activists will enlist and make the Army a real problem for straight people and a real haven for cliques of gay men which is exactly what the army does not need.

Barack Hussein Obama is an abject marxist and an enemy to the US constitution and the principles upon which this nation was founded and has propsered.

It is not surprising that he will take steps that hurt our military and therefore our ability to defend ourselves. I expect that with his administration we will see actions in all other areas, foreign policy, economy, agriculture and everywhere else that tend to do the same thing.

I am so glad I retired when I did. The next four years will be a disaster for our military. I don’t even want to think about what will happen if he’s reelected. I know we survived Carter and Clinton, but this is going to be so much worse.

The shyster lawyers HAVE TO BE LICKIN' THEIR CHOPS OVER THIS. Lawsuits galore! FABULOUS!!! It's going to get ugly in the military until after Obama is gone and we regain our sanity in this country. It will happen. Hopefully in four years.

"I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution," he said in 2007.

I'll remember that when you eviscerate the Second Amendment.

“I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution,” he said in 2007.

Someone should remind him of these (empty) words when he and Eric Holder gut the Second Amendment.

“”I was a constitutional law professor, which means unlike the current president, I actually respect the Constitution,” he said in 2007.”

I don’t see why thats necessarily true at all. Surely someone can study A without respecting A in the sense of following/adhering to it, no? That’s poor logic on Obama’s part.

Hey, it’s part of the Madhi’s plan to reduce the military budget. Less troops mean less cash needed for salaries and weapons. Frees up cash for more interior decorating.

So - if openly gay folks are allowed in the military - who is going to have to pay the multi-million dollar lawsuits that will eventually come - when some pansy gets the crap beat out of him for hitting on a “brother in arms”?

On an earlier thread, same subject I posted

Gays in the Military, may not be a good idea, but have to say, they have been and are in the Military today.

I see a number of them in my neighborhood.
Marine officers, Navy officers, one an Aeronautical Engineer and enlisted.

I know a WWII Marine Vet, who served on Guadalcanal who is gay and other vets.

Not saying they are correct, but they are currently serving.
