Admit It: The Surge Worked (Peter Beinart)
Washington Post ^ | January 18, 2009 | Peter Beinart

Posted on 01/17/2009 7:18:37 PM PST by neverdem

It's no longer a close call: President Bush was right about the surge. According to Michael O'Hanlon and Jason Campbell of the Brookings Institution, the number of Iraqi war dead was 500 in November of 2008, compared with 3,475 in November of 2006. That same month, 69 Americans died in Iraq; in November 2008, 12 did.

Violence in Anbar province is down more than 90 percent over the past two years, the...

--snip--

Younger liberals, by contrast, have had no such chastening experiences. Watching the Bush administration flit from disaster to disaster, they have grown increasingly dismissive of conservatives in the process. They consume partisan media, where Republican malevolence is taken for granted. They laugh along with the "Colbert Report," the whole premise of which is that conservatives are bombastic, chauvinistic and dumb. They have never had the ideologically humbling experience of watching the people whose politics they loathe be proven right.

In this way, they are a little like the Bushies themselves. One reason the Bush administration fell prey to such monumental hubris was that it didn't take its critics seriously. Convinced that the Reagan years had forever vindicated deregulated capitalism and unfettered American might, the Bushies blithely dismissed liberals who warned about deregulation, or Europeans who warned about military force, on the grounds that history had consistently proved those critics wrong. "You want to know what I really think of the Europeans?" a top Bush official declared during the Iraq debate. "I think they have been wrong on just about every major international issue for the past 20 years."

Today, by contrast, it is conservatives who have been proven wrong again and again. Politically and intellectually, the right is discredited, and the arguments of its rump minority in Congress will be easy to dismiss. Liberal self-confidence is sky-high...

I can't think about America's problems without finding its cause coming from the left, but Beinart got one thing right. Just how much deregulating did Bush do? Not much.

Liberals sure like to hear themselves declare they are smarter than everybody else, don't they?

Oh, and conservatives are dumb. They like to hear themselves say that, too.

Increasingly, day-by-day, any common ground is falling off into an ever-widening chasm of differences.

Obama and the democrats will take credit for our Victory in Iraq after they worked very hard on defeating us there. This will be the most disgusting outcome of the democrat victory in the last elections which is taking credit for a Victory in a war where they did everything under the sun to make us lose it.

Younger liberals, by contrast, have had no such chastening experiences.

That is simply because they are so disassociated from reality that they fail to see that they are not only wrong, but the source of most of the problems in the nation.

Boy does this guy have it bass-ackwards! All that de-regulation of the financial markets was done before George W. Bush became President. And I can't think of one thing, politically, that Europeans have done right in the last 20 years, all they while they've looked down their Continental noses at the US.

Much of what the Bush administration did wrong was the result of resorting to multilaterialism to placate world opinion angered abot our interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. We see where this has led us with respect to North Korea and Iran. Instead of putting the screws to these parties designated by Bush as members of the axis of evil, they tried toothless diplomacy. Now Iran is stronger than ever. Nato has show itself a paper tiger in Afghanistan, where most of the non-Americans troops cannot engage in combat operations. Britain which began as a strong ally in Iraq, ended up by embarrasing itself. If Obama continues the feckless policies begun by Condi Rice, the Eurpopeans will be happy. We will be lucky if the whole region does not fall apart.

Did you read the comments at WaPo? They were depressing. Liberals are so very misinformed. The next four years are going to be very depressing. I hope the Iraqis will survive Obama and his fellow ignorant liberals.

Have the Europeans done any better in the last 8 years?

Boy, you should read the comments at the WaPo. There are actually people giving Obama credit for ending the violence in Iraq. Essentially the argument is that once the Iraqis realized that they were fighting George W. Bush and that the people of the US opposed the war, they stopped fighting.

Brilliant work, isn’t it?

Then there’s the guy who wishes cancer, AIDS, schizophrenia, lung cancer, splinters, and dementia on Bush and his daughters.

I have no respect for liberals. None.

One can only hope that the Washington Post fails in time. One by one the propaganda machines need to fall. Sadly, I think David Gregory is going to be prancing around our TV sets for awhile...

As Ronald Reagan said, "our liberal friends believe so many things that are just not so."

Oh, Bush contracted out our dealings with Iran. Which shows onece again the truism that diplomacy without the threat of force is useless. I am reminded of the League sanctions against Mussolini after he sought to establish an African Empire. Sanctions are useless because someone is always breaking the circle. Ditto with respect to Iran.

“We see where this has led us with respect to North Korea and Iran. Instead of putting the screws to these parties designated by Bush as members of the axis of evil, they tried toothless diplomacy”

And the Dems, the MSM, and various Europeans keep claiming we haven’t yet tried diplomacy. Morons!

Beinart is a liberal and hasn't been around long himself. Economically illiterate, he still is wet behind the ears and most likely always will be. His ability to see the success in Iraq is anomlous.

I have no respect for liberals. None.

Liberalism is, indeed, a mental disease.

They have to have somebody to hate. And their happiness is achieved only thru destoying the target of their hatred.

Liberals are the perfect totalitarians.
