There’s an FR thread or two of people who have contacted the Hawaiian hospitals and came up with nothing on Obama being born in Hawaii.
Born: Dec. 23, 1910, Wailuku, MauiEducation: Skipped seventh and eighth grades; Honolulu Military Academy, Punahou School, where West played clarinet.
Naval service: Joined Navy Reserve in January 1940, activated Sept. 5, 1941 — March 26, 1946. Resigned from Navy Reserve in 1949 at rank of commander.
Medical career highlights: Delivered 5,000 babies; President, Hawaii Medical Association (1963); Medical Director, Straub Clinic (now Straub Clinic & Hospital) until retirement in 1975; one of the founders and first president of the American College of Physician Executives (1975).
Family: Wife, Mary Ann (Carlisle) West, died 1994; daughter, Jo-Anne Lewis (Kaimuki); sons, Kenneth C. West (Phoenix) and Rodney West Jr. (Spokane, Wash.)
It doesn't mention him practicing at Kapi’olani Medical Center.
Chief Engineer knows more than anyone else about 0bama’s history. I remember that supposedly someone contacted all the hospitals to find out if 0bama was born there - it was from another site. Because of privacy laws the question could not be asked directly but IIRC it was determined (how I don’t know, that’s why my response is not really useful, just my memory) that 0bama’s mother had not been a patient at any of them. So if she wasn’t a patient, she couldn’t have given birth.
Hopefully CE will see this tomorrow and chime in with facts!
One internet source contradicting a print source, is hardly conclusive. More research is needed. A better source, would be from persons named in the 1961 birth announcement column originally printed in the Honolulu Advertiser (that also listed Obama). If one other 1961 birth was assisted by West, it indicates that he was still practicing (possibly as a privately hired obstetrician).
Did Straub Clinic have an obstetric unit in 1961? And when he was director, did he still deliver babies (either there or elsewhere)?

The article doesn’t say that Dr. West claimed to have delivered Obama.
What a crock of sh** that story is. How convenient is that. I think that teacher is a lot wealthier now than before she told that story to the press. GIVE ME A BREAK!

From what I’ve read on other threads (and hopefully CE will chime in on this thread tomorrow) only Kapiolani and Queens Hospitals had delivery rooms, and I’m not totally sure about Kapiolani - maybe they just expanded since then. I’ve never read that Straub had delivery rooms. I’m wondering if they just had out-patient services for pregnant women at that time. Hopefully someone either knows or can find out.

Rodney T. West, M.D. was born on the island of Maui in the then, Territory of Hawaii. He graduated from the Punahou School in Honolulu and attended Northwestem University in Chicago, where he earned his Medical Degree. He returned to the Islands, spent l8 months as an intern and resident at the Queen’s Hospital and then went into a private practice in Honolulu. He joined the United States Naval Reserve in January of l940. Twenty months later, September 5, 1941, he was called to active duty and was stationed at the Medical Dispensary on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor and was there on the morning of December 7, l941. He spent the rest of World War II on Johnston Island in the Pacific and at various Naval Air Stations on the American mainland. I think this teacher is just trying to get her 15 minutes of fame ...
She gives an interview 2 days AFTER Obama’s inauguration, referencing a 47 year-old recollection of a dinner with the doctor who SUPPOSEDLY delivered Obama almost 5 years AFTER he retired from practice (1956).
AND, he cannot CONFIRM or REFUTE since he died February 24, 2008.
AND, Dr. West was also a graduate of the Punahou School, where Barbara Nelson taught, and where Obama graduated.
This is ALL TOO convenient ... sounds pretty hoofty to me !!!
History of Straub
Straub Clinic & Hospital was founded in 1921 as "The Clinic" by Dr. George F. Straub. Dr. Straub was educated in Germany and came to practice in Hawaii in 1907. In 1910, he conceived the idea of forming a group of physicians to provide better, more specialized care for his patients. It, however, took over 10 years to bring this idea to fruition.
The first step in 1912 was the construction of a wood frame building at 410 South Beretania Street. Here, Dr. Straub established his office on the first floor and his home on the second. By 1916 his practice had grown to the point that he recruited an assistant, Dr. Guy C. Milnor. Looking to the future, Dr. Straub began to envision a clinic providing specialized care in five major fields of medicine: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Internal Medicine, ENT, and Clinical Pathology. To this end, he next enlisted Dr. Arthur Jackson, a specialist in internal medicine in 1920 and the group carried on for a short time as Straub, Milnor, and Jackson.
In the latter part of 1920, Dr. Howard Clarke resigned his commission in the United States Army and joined as a specialist in Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat. Dr. Eric A Fennel also left the Army about this time and joined the group as pathologist.
In January, 1921, the five founding partners formally organized themselves as a legal partnership. At Dr. Straub's insistence the group he founded did not bear his name, and it was to be known simply as "The Clinic".
Dr. Harry L. Arnold, Sr., specialist in internal medicine and radiology, joined The Clinic in 1921. Dr. Joseph E. Strode, a general surgeon, joined in 1922, and Dr. Joseph Palma, a pediatrician, joined in 1924.
Dr. Straub's influence on "The Clinic" was profound and distinctive. His favorite mottoes were, "To win the race or die running", and "Take care of patients and they will take care of you". Another motto derived from his name was, "Such true rivalry as unity begets".
In 1952, after years of success and growth, "The Clinic" was renamed "Straub Clinic" in honor of Dr. Straub. Dr. Straub died in May, 1966.
In the time since Dr. Straub's death, there have been major and dramatic changes at Straub. A brief chronology of these events includes:
Straub Hospital
January 6, 1970, ground was broken for a 159-bed hospital and adjacent parking structure. Later that year the Straub Clinic Partnership became a corporation and renamed Straub Clinic, Inc. February 4, 1973, it became Straub Clinic & Hospital, and Straub Hospital opened it doors.
Pali Momi Clinic
Straub opened its first satellite clinic on the Leeward side of Oahu in 1977. The clinic eventually outgrew its first location and moved to the Pali Momi Medical Center Office Building in January 1991. In September, 2001 the satellite moved to its current site and was renamed the Straub Pearlridge Clinic.
