No conservative should support smoking. No conservative should support a tax increase socking it to one group or one industry.
If they are going to increase taxes on tobacco they should raise taxes on junk foods and alcohol because they both cause increases in health costs, also.
Tax one, tax them all.

I only smoke about 8-10 all year. It won’t hit me too hard.

Hey, just because tobacco was one of the reasons for the founding of the Jamestown Settlement doesn’t mean we have to worship at that altar forever.
Kids shouldn’t even be taught that.
What kind of impression would that leave on them.
Peoples health is too important. History must reflect the views of today.

Oh, they will, they will. But, why stop only at junk food.
A sliding tax scale based on the fat content of your meal would enhance revenue very much. And why not, a burger has more fat than a salad, without dressing, of course. But tax the dressing.
Once the principle of taxation for health has been enshrined, there is virtually no human activity that cannot be taxed.

My personal preference is that people should pay a tax on their body weight.
A fat person uses more resources, hence if you your weight exceeds the proper height to weight ratio, the IRS and the state ought to tax you at a rate that will encourage one to lose weight.

New federal taxes on Internet sales, Internet access and likely arms and ammunition are almost assured and watch for increases in federal excise taxes on liquor. To support our new socialist utopia a federal Value Added Tax (VAT)on all purchases is another possibility.

History must reflect the views of today. Then it isn't history, it is a bunch of revisionist horse manure.
If you can't give people facts, warts and all, as viewed by the people of the time, no one will understand what has gone before.
Tell the truth, and let the chips fall where they may.
How else can people understand progress in a civilization?
People already have the modern viewpoint, for good or ill.
For instance, all humans used to crap without toilet paper.
Eeeewww, that's just too ugly to put in the book! So, no one understands how far we have come, because we take such ameneties for granted. Also, noone understands the leaves you grab as a field espedient shouldn't be shiny and green and come in threes...

Well said. Sometimes I wonder how many people have taken the time to actually read our constitution. I don’t live in a democracy, I live in a republic.

How about they not raise taxes at all but spend less? Isn't that the real question? They know that just like here in this thread, some say sock it to em, and the others say tax someone else....when we should all be saying FU and your taxes and demand decreases not increases. But aside from that....if they think they just raise the cig tax like new york, get ready for a boat load of other taxes to go up to support the policing of increased black market cigs that will be available everywhere because of the market it will create....just like NY, only now it's everywhere.
One thing you will always find in a socialistic society with a crumbling economy....a healthy black market.

Our federal guidelines already state who should get medical care if costs need to be cutback. In Oregon who has physician assisted suicide, a gentleman needed help with his cancer medical costs. Oregon WROTE him a letter and said they would not pay for his medical costs but would pay for physician assisted suicide. When confronted by reporters they said they were following federal guidelines.
Socialized healthcare is part of fabian socialism. As far back as 1947, CPUSA ran their candidate in the USA on a platform for universal health care. Thank gawd, he was found out.

The same here. It’s less than a dozen for me, I’m sure. Just an enjoyment, made better by the occasional bourbon.

No conservative should support smoking. So you don't support a person's right to choose to engage in legal activity. But you do support oppressive taxation.
You don't sound very conservative to me.
To: domeika
Lot of truth there domeika. Hubby and I have bailed out on as much tax liability as we possibly can. He does smoke, but makes his own. I (and we) refuse to purchase ANYTHING that is taxable unless absolutely necessary. We sold one home about 5 years ago to eliminate that tax every year. We refuse to buy new vehicles as we used to every 4 or 5 years. That not only cuts our income tax we would pay for a new vehicle, but increased personal property tax of owning a newer vehicle. Every and All taxable items will be scrutinized.
Our values do not permit us to break the law, therefore we assess everything that we pay tax on, and made every possible cut. And we will continue to do just that. The government does not know how to spend it, all they know how to do is increase it.

So you are a smoke nazi? Maybe we should taxd beer and wine and booze higher too. Maybe you can join with Mayor bloomers and hike the tax on junkfood, soda, cigars, ammo, skin mags, lapdances, gasoline and anything else you don’t approve of.
