Obama gives chilly reception to canceled school
The Associated Press ^ | 1/28/09 | BEN FELLER

"Can I make a comment that is unrelated to the economy very quickly?" the new president told reporters at a gathering with business leaders. "And it has to do with Washington. My children's school was canceled today. Because of, what? Some ice?"

When I first moved here I couldn’t breath. I felt like I was in a sauna. I rushed from an a/c motel room to an a/c car to an a/c job. Now it’s just a little warm at 100.

While I don’t live in the city, I do work here, and the services I’ve seen have improved under the Fenty administration.

Yeah- I grudgingly respect Fenty. He seems to really care about trying to improve DC. We've had a couple of decent mayors in a row here.

We will get over 12 inches today in the upstate NY area in the lee of Lake Erie, and people will be out driving with few problems.

We have huge plows, lots of open land that accepts the piles of snow on the sides of the roads, and experienced drivers, who know which roads are less apt to get hit by drifting.

All that said, if we were hit by an ice storm, we wouldn’t be driving, and the schools would be closed. If I were in an area that didn’t have experienced plow crews, had drivers unused to snow and ice, I wouldn’t go out on the roads.

Who wants to be rear-ended or t-boned by an inexperienced driver who has no idea of a safe driving speed, proper distance, or how to approach an intersection when driving on greasy, slick roads? Who wants their kids out waiting at the bus stop, when drivers can’t control skidding out?

Obama is a jerk!

Don’t y’all think that maybe you are reading waaaaay more into Obama’s throwaway comment than it deserves? It was delivered to laughs, exactly as it was intended.

Who amongst us non-home-schoolers hasn’t expressed frustration at the school system for closing school when maybe it seemed unnecessary?

I wonder what comment Ms. Palin may have made under similiar circumstances, coming, as shes does (like Obama), from a place that makes Washington winters look seriously wimpy.

BTW. Schools closed up here in Baltimore as well today. But my 9 minute commute took about 9 and a half minutes.

If your town can’t drive in it safely

That's my point..maybe they should buy some plows and salt. It's not like DC usually has 0 inches of snow or ice each year.

I live in North GA now. We don't handle it any better than DC.

Jimmy Carter used to manage the schedule for the White House tennis court.

Obama wants to decide when the schools should close because of the weather. These people with nothing important to do tend to get bogged down in minutiae.

Too late to add a few snow plows for DC to the stimulus package?

D.C. has like three snow plows.

And likely 300 liberal bureacrat remoras to manage the snow removal program. If not now, I'm sure it's in the stimulus package.

Obama said: "I'm saying, when it comes to the weather, folks in Washington don't seem to be able to handle things."

Was he directing this to Algore and his other GW buddies?

Put those kids in Washington D.C. public schools and then lets talk about “flinty Chicago toughness”

Obama does not understand Washington DC. When the first flake hits the ground in DC, all Hell breaks loose.

I heard on the radio that DC schools were open today. My kids are home all day from Fairfax County Schools....

Doesn’t anyone see what an arrogant SOB this Obama is?

Why. Just because everything is all about him?

Watching Mason-Dixon line area residents deal with snow & ice is quite entertaning. Though I wondered if, when our schools recently closed for low temperatures, if Canada completely shuts down in the winter. How could they ever complete a full school year? Perhpas that’s why they’re portraid as slightly slow.

(Only portriad now, I have fond respect for our lumberjack neighbors, and Ike, C’est Manifique- eh).

Washington is hilly? Besides the hill that holds up the Capitol, since when?
Curved roads? Uh, it’s laid out like a grid with diagonal cross-avenues, for the most part.

It's because we don't like him.

But my 9 minute commute took about 9 and a half minutes.

Schools close a lot more easily than businesses with money to make do. The rationale, at least in these parts, is that you have to close the schools if any location in the county is not easily accessible to buses on that day.

Like in Arizona. Rain is a huge deal. It becomes a flood here when it rains a lot. But, we can generally had over 100 degree temperature like nothing.
