GOP fails to limit children's health program
Associated Press ^ | January 28, 2009 | Kevin Freking

Senate Republicans fell short Wednesday in their effort to curtail the expansion of a government health insurance program for lower-income children.

The Senate rejected the Republican proposal by a resounding 65-32 vote. Democratic lawmakers say the GOP's legislation didn't go far enough, covering only about 2 million uninsured children, or roughly half the number that Democrats' seek to cover.

The Senate is considering this week the renewal of the State Children's Health Insurance Program. The program is a state-federal partnership that provides government-sponsored health insurance to children of the working poor.

Democrats want to more than double spending on SCHIP. President Barack Obama has urged Congress to quickly send him a children's health bill that he can sign into law. The House has already passed a bill comparable to the one before the Senate.

Republicans offered an alternative approach through an amendment sponsored by Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. McConnell argued that his amendment focused more on helping low-income families and did not rely on tax increases to pay for the additional health spending. His amendment also would not allow federal funding to extend health coverage to children of newly arrived legal immigrants, as the Democratic bill allows.

Democrats also defeated an amendment from Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., that would have prohibited federal funding for health coverage of children in families with incomes exceeding $65,000, or the median state income. The amendment was defeated 60-36.

This monstrosity covers illegals and pays for baby-killing.

Delusional RATS propose to fund the huge cost by hiking cigarette taxes to $1.00 per pack.

It appears we only have between 32 and 34 Republican Senators these days. The government should not be in the business of insurance. This is another effort by the Democrats to buy support. They are buying it with our dollars.

You’ve just got to wonder if some Republicans have two brain cells to rub together any longer.

Yep, name names. Any Republican who wants to undermine our freedoms by siding with the Dems must be named and voted out.

Yes, but its a downpayment on SOCIALIZED MEDICINE you see, and having the glorious health care system of the USSR or Cuba makes it *worth it*.

The Liberal Media is so biased.

We need to know who are the solid ones and who are the wobbly ones.

1) Republicans offered an alternative approach through an amendment sponsored by Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. McConnell argued that his amendment focused more on helping low-income families and did not rely on tax increases to pay for the additional health spending. His amendment also would not allow federal funding to extend health coverage to children of newly arrived legal immigrants, as the Democratic bill allows.”
The Senate rejected the Republican proposal by a resounding 65-32 vote.

2) “During the debate over SCHIP, Republicans also failed to revive a prohibition on federal funding for international groups that perform abortions or provide abortion information.

By a 60-37 vote, Democrats turned back an amendment that would have denied aid to groups that may be involved in abortion but also work on other health care issues abroad.”

Obama wants to cut TriCare for military veterans and extend medical care to illegal aliens. What a total asshole. That description falls on the shoulders of his socialist Democrat enablers in the House and Senate as well.

If you’ve been rolling your own cigarettes to avoid the high taxes on pre-packaged cigarettes you better buy some lube.
The tax on 1 pound of tobacco will go from $1.09 to over $24.00. Oh and pre-packaged smokes, the tax will go from .39 to $1.

Thank you for the comments. I guess I’m a hard nosed individual, but you know as well as I do, that there isn’t any kid going to fail to be helped by our medical system, if they have an urgent need. Ask any illegal immigrant and they can explain how it’s done.

If we want to help kids, quit taxing their parents so much, and get out of the way of businesses that want to employ them.

What incentive is there for businesses or individuals, to perform if the government is going to handicap them to the degree that they do?

We keep finding new ways to help. Sooner or later folks have it better not working, than taking that entry job they can build from.

How is a cigarette tax constitutional? I don't think it's covered by the 16th Amendment.

Perhaps it would be more productive to find a way to make Socialized Medicine and huge expansions in the welfare state UNPOPULAR.

After all, almost 60 Democrats voted for funding abortions, funding healthcare for illegal immigrants, and voting to subsidize health insurances with tax money for people making up to $80,000/yr. How is it that they feel able to vote this way? How can we get the media to not be so biased in covering SCHIP?

Some day someone will wake up and realize that while all Conservatives are Republicans (except Zell Miller) not all Republicans are Conservatives.

Voting Republican and voting Conservative are two separate things. The RATS don’t know any better. We should.

It’s time to call the House on the Stimulus bill, now.

Then, call your Senators, they’re about to vote on SCHIP. Tell them how you feel about their vote on the Martinez amendment!

It took me several tries to get through, but call!

the Roll call vote on the Martinez Amendment (to stop funding abortions) is here:

http://michellemalkin.com/2009/01/28/senate-roll-call-vote-taxpayer-funding-of-overseas-abortions-reinstated/

3 RINO votes - Murkowski, Snowe, and Specter.

New Senator Gillibrand did the pro-abort thing and voted for taxpayer funded abortions, along with 57 other Democrats. 36 GOP votes to to the right thing. The only Democrat voting with Republicans was Nelson of Nebraska.

I think the REAL “hope and change” is the HOPE that the GOP will stop being suckers and will start standing up for the right principles.
