NASA engineers are scratching their heads over some unexpected behavior from the long-lived Spirit rover, which began its sixth year exploring Mars this month.
Spirit failed to report in to engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., last weekend, prompting a series of diagnostic tests this week to hunt the glitch's source.
The aging Mars rover did not beam home a record of its weekend activities and, more puzzlingly, apparently failed to even record any of its actions on Sunday, mission managers said.
...
By Monday, Spirit's mission controllers decided to tell the rover to find the sun with its camera on Tuesday to determine its location on Mars.
Early Tuesday, the rover beamed back that it had tried to follow the instructions of its human handlers, but couldn't find the sun.

Either it’s been assimilated by the Borg, or it’s developing Alzheimers...

Sigh. Growing old is a bitch. It went to the cafeteria at 4:00 pm and forgot where it parked the car.

The area surrounding the Meteor Crater in Arizona (between Winslow and Winona) looks a lot like the surface of Mars.

"unable to find the sun"
We are leaving out the obvious answer. When Obama was elected, the sun blew up and Obama is comvering it up. The rover didn't get a copy of the TPS report with the new coversheet and thus is reporting what it actually sees.

Met the writer of Wall-e this past week on a panel. He is a really great guy and some dumb ass liberal was spewing at him to confess his film was really about “insert all the imaged liberal agenda glib right here” and he said no he did not make this film with any of that in mind at all and in fact he has been working on it so long that when I came to put the film out there he thought momentarily about changing some things because he didn't intend some of this imagery to be interpreted as being in support of those silly things like a green agenda etc. that everyone is shoving down our throats. Anyway. I really thought a lot of him as both a writer and a man.

One of my favorite surface images of Mars.
On May 19th, 2005, NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit captured this stunning view as the Sun sank below the rim of Gusev crater on Mars. This Panoramic Camera mosaic was taken around 6:07 in the evening of the rover's 489th martian day, or sol. Spirit was commanded to stay awake briefly after sending that sol's data to the Mars Odyssey orbiter just before sunset. The image is a false color composite, showing the sky similar to what a human would see, but with the colors slightly exaggerated.
