Court sides with Missouri school in flap over rebel flag on student's cap

A federal appeals court ruled that a Missouri school district had the right to suspend a student who wore a cap depicting a Confederate flag. The ruling Friday by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis said schools may restrict First Amendment rights "in certain limited circumstances." It affirms a lower court ruling from 2007. Bryce Archambo was 14 when he was suspended from Farmington High School in September 2006, after wearing a baseball cap depicting the Confederate flag with the words, "C.S.A. Rebel Pride, 1861." The district said the flag was associated with racism and feared it could incite violence in a school where racial tensions were already high. Archambo's attorney calls the ruling disappointing and says he will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

I don't personally own a rebel flag and have no intention of ever buying one. Old Glory is good enough for me. I do support peoples right to wear it of fly it if they choose. The Intellectual Redneck

Except for a few years in the 1860’s wasn’t the flag flying over “the land” the stars & stripes??

Not a big deal here. The Courts have long upheld the right of schools to have “dress codes”.

Indeed. Schools can and do restrict students from wearing simple colors such as red or blue. Otherwise the crips and bloods would destroy what's left of the LA school district.

I would very much like to see “Heart of Dixie” printed on license plates again instead of that insipid “Stars Fell on Alabama”.

I don’t know; a visit to the Alabama Music Hall of Fame may change your attitude. The place is almost a ghost facility and doesn’t have a lot of visitors most of the year but is a well maintained and organized exhibit. If I were from Alabama I’d be really proud.
