I know it’s a big lake but I would have figured that it had frozen over by now.

The engineer is responsible for the engines, but he is under the direction of the Captain. A “runaway” engine that causes the vessel to become involved in an accident may not end the Captains career if it can be shown that the Captains actions, upon learning that the engine had “runaway”, prevented further injuries.
As an example: The Captain is preparing to dock. A throttle cable snaps and for some reason the throttle sticks open and the transmission can not be shifted above “XX” RPMs and the vessel is heading for a grounding. Steering the vessel into the dock may have been the only way to stop the vessel and prevent additional injuries. (Speculation)

Most runaway engines come from single engine homes.

It’s all that ethanol they put in the fuel. They’re alwways at least half drunk, and can’t take proper care of their little bangers.

Two ferries run 24/7 every 12 minutes and keep the channel ice free. There’s a raging blizzard up here now, probably a factor. I just got off the ferry couple hours ago.
