COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Olympic superstar Michael Phelps could face criminal charges as part of the fallout from a photo that surfaced showing the swimmer smoking from a marijuana pipe at a University of South Carolina house party.

A spokesman for Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott, who is known for his tough stance on drugs, said Tuesday the department was investigating.

"Our narcotics division is reviewing the information that we have, and they're investigating what charges, if any, will be filed," said Lt. Chris Cowan, a spokesman for agency.

Fuk’n doper already admitted it and apologized. Another weak link. You know the type.

No argument and no respect for Phelps, but that was the court of public opinion, not court!

“Didn’t Phelps already admit to it?”

Not exactly. He admitted to “regrettable behavior” and using bad judgment, but he didn't actually say anything about smoking pot, although i's pretty obvious that's what he was referring to when he issued his apology. He needs to just keep his mouth shut about it now.

Someone is just trying to make a name for themself.

Which is the whole point. There are few cops stupid enough to actually charge this guy, but a soap-box publicity stunt? Right up their alley.

Yeah I know the type. World class athlete. Rich now, and if he’s even mildly careful, he will be for the rest of his life. The war on some drugs claims another victim.

Didn’t Phelps already admit to it?

The DA still has to prove that a crime has been committed. The DA would have to prove that it was actually Phelps in the photo, that marijuana was actually in the bong, and that Phelps actually smoked it.

And aren’t there probably witnesses that could be coerced into saying it was marijuana?

Do you really think a jury would convict a record breaking, beloved Olympian for someone else saying he smoked some pot?

Well, I’m sure you might could get someone out there to round up 12 people, but seriously, this would get the legalize marijuana groups going into fits. What would be gained by that?

This is silly. What next? Will police charge people for drug use mentioned in their biographies?

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott

Nanny statist attention whore.

How about you try solving a crime involving an actual victim? Or is that too dangerous, Leon?

By this rationale, why don’t they charge our current sitting President. Afterall, he published an autobiography admitting to smoking pot, snorting blow, and drinking alcohol as a minor. Why not charge him?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

That’s IT!

If they charge Phelps, I want charges brought against Obama! Oh darn, statute of limitations probably. But still!

“And aren’t there probably witnesses that could be coerced into saying it was marijuana?”

If the Sheriff is serious about charging Phelps you can bet he's looking for witnesses right now.

I think this would be a dumb move on the sheriff's part. If he goes through with this I bet he has an extremely well funded opponent in his next election.

I doubt many fear the marijuana-legalization crowd. I mean, if the U.S. House of Representatives were to vote on ending the federal government’s involvement in marijuana crime completely; I’d be shocked if the pro-marijuana side could muster even 100 votes of the 218 needed.

Tobacco is smoked in the legally purchased glass tobacco smoking pipe.
Obama will step in and save Phelps...
