Gang of children - some as young as TEN - caught slowly roasting puppies over bonfire (See pic in URL) By Jaya Narain 04th February 2009

A gang of children aged as young as 10 were caught trying to roast a pair puppies over a bonfire. Passerby Melanie Johnson spotted them kicking the pups and holding them over the fire on a canal bank. The youngsters fled, abandoning the dogs, when she challenged them.

Ms Johnson, 32, took the puppies home, then passed them on to an RSPCA centre where staff treated the dogs and are now looking to find them new homes.

RSPCA animal shelter manager Jean Spencer said: 'The puppies are only seven weeks old. The fur on one of them was singed and the other has a small hernia.

'Fortunately, they are going to be fine.

Chad charcoal ban enflames public

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7853250.stm

A ban on the use of charcoal in Chad is making life hard for people already struggling with high food prices.

Families are being forced to burn furniture, cow dung, rubbish and roots of plants in order to cook.

Since the clampdown was announced - officially in order to help the environment - charcoal has become almost impossible to find.

From the article...

“’The lady who brought them in was in quite a state when she got here. She walked here with a puppy under each arm and was clearly very distressed.

‘To think that children could be so cruel is really disgusting.’

She added: ‘The puppies are absolutely gorgeous. Everyone here has fallen in love with them.

‘They will stay here with us for just a few days before going to our RSPCA centre in Halifax, where staff will get them re-homed.’”

It reminds me of that horrible story about the 2 young boys in the UK kidnapping a toddler and killing him. Sick. Just sick. I think that happened around 1993.

When we visited last March....there was the teen that had disappeared but was found locked up in a trundle bed. Found out later....the parents planned the whole thing.

The world is going mad. Everywhere.

One of the most dangerous and incorrect premises of modern thought is that people are born with an innate sense of right and wrong. The majority of people, in almost every poll, agree with the statement, "If all the options are laid out, children will usually make the right choice."

You don't have to teach a child to push another kid down. You don't have to teach a child to steal, and you don't have to teach a child to torture puppies. You have to teach them NOT to do those things.

I can hear the BBC announcer now in his clipped RP deliver:

"A band of 'south-Asian' youths, some as young as ten, were spotted roasting small dogs alive along a canal bank in Manchester. Officials of the local branch of the RSPCA have taken the unfortunate pups into custody. The whereabouts of the youths is as yet unknown."

I'd say it's 50-50. Pakistani Muslims might do this, and Muslims are apt to remember what Mohammed had to say about dogs.

But some of the slum youth in the UK can be pretty vile, too. Remember this movie?

I don't think that these types of things are all that more common today than 50 years ago. Evil, ignorance and bad parenting has been around forever. We are now more knowlegable of these occurrences than we were 50 years ago due to cable TV and the internet means of mass communication.

More important than race is what religion are they? Since it doesn't say I suppose they could be any, but Islam is the only religion that sees dogs as “unclean”. A natural reaction for children that age would be to cuddle a cute little puppy not torture it to death. They must have learned this sick behavior from someone. Either their parents are monsters, or they are Muslim. Same difference in the end I guess.

The crime is animal cruelty. And I’ve read that most serial killers get their start torturing animals before stepping up to humans.

As far as I’m concerned these kids should be put down NOW before they continue on that path!

I’d have to believe that is highly improbable. Would the UK really permit roving bands of starving children? Most homeless are adults, although they may have children with them.

Nasty little barbarians is the more logical conclusion.

I eat animals that live on feed lots, and they have NO right. Either do dogs.

The crime is torturing animals. Helpless animals.

BTW, torturing animals is usually the first step for serial killers.

I never said innocent.
I would not let my kids play with animal torturers OR lynch-mob advocates. -- but I would call the police on the former, and merely rebuke the latter.

One of the most dangerous and incorrect premises of modern thought is that people are born with an innate sense of right and wrong.

According the latest research, it's actually a bit more complicated than a nature or nurture issue. Normal humans do have an innate moral sense that disgusts people at the thought of doing certain things. They aren't born with it and it takes several years to develop but, in normal people, it will develop. This innate sense of morality is dependent on emotional engagement (why we care much more strongly and viscerally about the idea of our families being murdered than unnamed strangers being murdered in a far off country) and works with a parallel moral decision making process that's coldly utiliarian and emotally detached. You can condition, train, or even just temporarily encourage people to ignore the feeling produced by the innate moral sense (which people experience as a conscience) and pay attention to the cool utilitarian thoughts, instead. In the iconography of classic cartoons, people really do have a sort of angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other and just like those cartoons, people can be trained or encouraged to listen to or ignore one or the other.

An estimated 4% of people never develop that innate moral sense and become psychopaths. Not all psychopaths become serial killers or even criminals but they all lack any innate sense of morality and they have no conscience. If they want to see what a drowning looks like, they might push a person into a pool and watch them drown and not feel bad about it. You can't appeal to their conscience because they have none. And psychopaths can be very intelligent and can manipulate normal people to go along with the ride because normal people also check their moral feelings by watching those around them. If the people around you are shocked by something, you are more likely to listen to your own sense of disgust than if they react with indifference. And the people with a lessened moral sense who are not full blown psychopaths can become narcissists. And, yes, I'm claiming that ignoring emotions entirely and being coldly ruthless is a bad thing, because evidence shows that it is.

Society used to have traditions and institutions that worked to thwart and marginalize psychopaths. All of the things in traiditional culture that demanded conformity, accountability, and (importantly) delayed gratification and patience all worked to marginalize psychopaths who are generally non-conformists, avoid accountability, and have no patience. By embracing a culture of impatience and non-conformity, we've created an environment wher psychopaths and narcissists can thrive and even outperform normal people. As such, normal people are looking to pschopaths and narcissists not as outcasts who don't fit in but as cool role models and successes to emulate. And this is tilting normal people to ignore their conscience and behave more like psychopaths because it's "cool". And note that "cool", one of the most important things for a person to be these days, is about being emotionally cool and detached. That's exactly what psychopaths and narcissists are. They don't care about anything but themselves.

To summarize all of that, people are a product of nature and nuture. Nature can make a peson amoral/immoral and can give a person the tools to be moral. But nurture (a person's experiences and education) determines whether a person listens to or ignores their conscience. People really do have a sort of angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other shoulder, though a small percentage of people have only the devil and no angel to slow them down.

Wow, you think the death penalty is an appropriate punishment for torturing a puppy? You would take the life of a person for the life of an amimal? You sound like you are on the wrong site. Liberals think that animals are worth more than humans. Conservatives do not. We reserve the death penalty for cases when people kill people. I would also argue the death penalty for a person who molests a child but that is another discussion. You cant execute final judgement on a 10 year old because of what he might do. I know little boys who were cruel to animals when they were young and grew up to be perfectly normal. You reason that if all serial killers tortured puppies as children then all children who torture puppies will grow up to be serial killers. Your argument is a logical fallacy. Boys can be cruel! Some boys will torture an animal for the experience, then sympathize with the puppy, feel guilty for their behaviour and learn to be kind in the future. The ones who enjoy the first experience and have no guilt, those are the ones to look out for. The boys in this case need to be seriously punished for their crime not killed! You need some perspective.
