Former Sen. Bob Smith (R-N.H.) is thinking about running for the Senate again in 2010, but not in the state that sent him to Washington the first time.
Smith, who moved to Florida since losing to John Sununu in the 2002 GOP primary, is now looking at running for the open seat left by retiring Sen. Mel Martinez (R-Fla.).
According to the New Hampshire Union-Leader, Smith has sent an e-mail to supporters seeking their input on the race.
“The purpose of this letter is to simply ask for your opinion as to whether I should be a candidate,” Smith said, according to the paper. “If I were to become the next senator from Florida, the 18 years of seniority from my service in New Hampshire would make me one of the most senior Republicans in the U.S. Senate.”
Smith served two terms in the Senate and three in the House. His defeat came after he repudiated the Republican Party during an ill-fated run for president in 2000.
Soon after losing reelection, he moved to the Sunshine State to sell real estate.
My sympathies.
Free Republic is a Conservative Site, not a Republican Site. While I would not have done what he did, it was not as egregious as Teddy Roosevelt in 1912, and yet TR is often referred to as a hero of the GOP.
No, but Florida was a swing state in 2004. In fact, if Kerry had won Florida he would have been president. Bob Smith is a loon if he thinks he can win a Republican primary.
It would be like Zell Miller running for the senate as a Democrat again.
Senator Smith would count as an average Republican in Florida, based on the issues. Miller is not in line with the thinking of Democrats even in Georgia.
Boob Smith’s mind turned to mush long ago. He tried running for the Senate in Florida a few years ago and only raised a few thousand bucks before he dropped out. Well, if he wants to further embarrass himself that’s his affair.
An average Republican wouldn't vote for John Kerry.
If the choice is Charley Crist or Bob Smith, I doubt that I will be choosing my old acquaintence Crist.
That's like choosing between a turd and douchebag.
Luckily, Bob Smith wouldn't be the only choice apart from Crist. Marc Rubio and Connie Mack IV are running and are much better options than the traitor Smith.
Connie Mack would be my choice too, from those who are still in contention.
Heck, I’d take McCain (cough, puke) over Bob Smith. At least McNutty only threatened to leave the Republican party, and only considered endorsing Kerry in 2004.
Bob Smith is an embarrassment.
Good job Lucius Cornelius Sulla,
Thanks for the refresher.
Now that Jeb is out Bob will get my Vote
A conservative republican! Beats the heck out of a Senator Suntan.
