President Barack Obama is fighting to maintain control of the American political agenda after being rocked by a series of setbacks.
He has admitted "screwing up" key White House appointments and now faces possible defeat in the Senate over his economic stimulus bill.
He was also condemned by High Court judges in Britain after it emerged his administration was standing by a threat to halt intelligence co-operation in a row over the alleged torture of a Guantanamo Bay detainee.
Despite his best efforts, Mr Obama found himself being compared to George W. Bush, viewed among the Washington establishment as the epitome of an out-of-touch president.
During a round of television interviews in the US he said he had made an error in his handling of the Health secretary nomination of Tom Daschle, who was forced to pull out because of unpaid taxes.
Mr Obama has tried to create a contrast with his predecessor who was famously stumped when asked in 2004 what mistakes he'd made. He was eager to admit he'd erred, saying: "I messed up, I screwed up," Obama told CBS.
"It's important for this administration to send a message that there aren't two sets of rules you know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes."
He told NBC: "I'm frustrated with myself, with our team. I'm here on television saying I screwed up." The mea culpa was repeated again and again using almost the same words.
During what turned out to be the worst day of his young presidency just after Mr Daschle had withdrawn after his unconvincing explanations about how he had neglected to pay $128,000 in taxes on a limousine, Mr Obama and his wife Michelle slipped out to visit a school.
"We were just tired of

"On Tuesday, President Obama escaped from disaster by reading 'The Moon Over Star' to grade-school kids."
What an utter and complete DOPE!
MORE SOCIALISM IS NOT CHANGE!!
Who would have thought that a street walker with a wafer thin resume would make a good President?
Have you noticed, the critical articles are from foreign sources?
Our first admitted cokehead president gets rid of the suits and ties and uses words like screw.
Keeping it classy Barry...
And the fault is entirely with the media for its racist practice of elevating this man to superstar status because of his color, while avoiding asking him the tough questions which might have better revealed his character.
And “screwed up” is gutter slang unbecoming of the leader of the free world.
The ethics section [of whitehouse.gov] is currently being revised to reflect President Obama’s Executive Order concerning Ethics Commitments by Executive Branch Personnel, issued on January 21, 2009.
Please check back soon.
This always happens when you send a boy to do a man’s job.
Heh! It always gets darker just before the total blackout.
I thought so, too.
Way to inspire confidence, Oh Great One.
No, it is the faault of voters that failed to take action and inform THEMSELVES, instead of suckling on the teat of the MSM.
This is where this whole saga stops being laughable, and becomes downright maddening and scary. The people who put this man into power thought they were voting for American Idol, and were playing a game with something they didn´t understand, and we will face serious and possibly deadly consequences because of it.
Or “The best you’ll ever feel in your life (comparatively) is right before you die.
He definitely does not use the same lingo as baby boomers do.
But since I’m younger than Obama, I don’t always notice those things.
His “I want to give a shout out” to...are unbearable.
A tough day when you find out your nominee is a tax cheat so you have to escape the White House? Try a day when 3,000 citizens are murdered. Or how about when a major storm hits the US? If he has to escape the pressures of the White House, maybe Obama should try a visit down to Kentucky to see how FEMA’s doing. Word of advice to our President: There will be tougher days ahead. You’d better buck up quick, Jr.
What? He’s given up on the hope and change thingy?
He’s got to find some more crooks to nominate since he’s lost 4 already (Richardson, Daschle, Kellifer, Geithner..wait a minute...).
I hope these admissions are vaulted for use against him when he goes to re-run in 2012...
