In what appears to be a growing trend, displaced employees are turning to cybercrime using their corporate data access to steal, exploit and damage information networks, and may have cost businesses as much as $1 trillion globally according to a new study from McAfee and Purdue University's Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security
Although insiders have always posed a threat to information security, the report warns that the global recession is putting vital information at greater risk than ever before.
The report, Unsecured Economies: Protecting Vital Information (free, requires free registration) was released last week at the World Economic Forum and suggests that the economic downturn is increasing the security risk for corporations with 42 percent of respondents reporting that displaced workers were the biggest threat to sensitive information on the network.

No axe to grind there, eh? Pure scholarly research I’m sure.
Cha-CHANGE. $$$. ‘Strike while the iron’s hot’.
Send the bill to the Liberal God, Pelosi, and Reid.
Here we go again. When will they write the stories about the unemployed turning to cannibalism to make ends meet?
I heard this happened at Initech.
The moral of the story... make sure the IT guys, especially the ones with god-mode level of access, are the last out the door if you are downsizing. They can virtually destroy your company even after they are long gone.
I’m sure a great majority wouldn’t do such a thing, but desperation can have an effect on people.
Unfortunately it is true. There are other signs this is happening as well.
But then insider theft has always been a greater risk than external theft.
If you’re company is set up properly your IT guys should not have any unnecessary access or present a greater risk.
but then most companies think spending money on security is optional.
So I guess they are making $1000.00 a day and didn’t have listen to the infomercial......
If I’d had a good virus ready, I’d have gladly unleashed it upon the giant electronics conglomerate based in the IslamoNetherlands that fired me. But I did not. It would not have denied me sleep.
Peter Gibbons: [about the plan to steal from Initech] Before we go any further, all right, we have to swear to God, Allah, that nobody knows about this but us, all right? No family members, no girlfriends, nobody.
Samir: Of course.
Michael Bolton: Agreed,
Lawrence: [from the next apartment through the wall] Don't worry, man. I won't tell anyone either.
Michael Bolton: Who the fuck is that?
Peter Gibbons: Uh, don't worry about him. He's cool.
I’m glad somebody caught that...
