In the end, Tom Daschle had to go, not because of his tax problems, but because he had allowed a glimpse inside the Obama sausage factory. And what folks saw could have made even a certain peanut plant look pristine by comparison. It can be argued that Daschle's tax avoidance was less egregious than Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner's, even though the amount was substantially more....

My analogy: If I intentionally shoot someone and they die, but I have second thoughts and revive them, I still should at least go to jail for trying to kill them. I shouldn't get to say "Oops, it was a mistake", I'll just pay the guy's hospital bills", and then get handed a lucrative new job in charge of catching people who shoot each other.
What? You mean in this new era of ‘responsibility’, we should actually ask these folks to take responsibility for their actions?
Inside Obama’s sausage factory, conditions may be similar to some of the factories I’ve worked in. You don’t want to be the second guy to get hurt. First hand injury, say, will bring about heightened awareness and enforcement, so if you get similarly cut, soon after, the scrutiny and enforcement are quadrupled, and the investigating safety reactionaries will do all that they can to punish, or even fire, you for your carelessness. First guy hurt, though, he usually skates by with a warning.
Poor little Tommy Daschole. He spent all that money and didn’t even get the job. Next thing you now, he’ll want it all back.
