Reminds me of Georgia Lass’ final 2 words before she is vaporized by a falling toilet seat from a Soviet space station....”Oh, shite!”

Probably just misstatements in the going's on of the moment. Sounded like Sully himself used 1539 on one of the early transmissions. Truth is, once communication is established between ATC and a pilot they use a variety of ID’s for further transmissions. Although they don't usually change the numerical designation!

Somewhere in the first of half of the audio the controller gives a turn to another flight and you can't really tell what the call was.

One of the best HBO shows.
They ran it on the SciFi channel for a while.
Did the story every had some type of conclusion?

I liked his NY accent. Didn't show much, but when he first talked with Teterboro tower you could hear it then.

I don’t see it as any inter-service jab.
Just a case of pride in a particular service.
We see it every day here on FR.

And for anyone wanting to know about CACTUS it would be the corporate telephony identifier for America West and US Airways.

How true! It came up originally because the discrepancy between what the news guys were saying and what was almost certainly actually happening was just another indication of how little trust you can put into early news reports.

They were really confused by the runway numbering system! Had the poor guy taking off in all directions and even had him landing the opposite direction on the river.

I suspect Capt. Sully would make a much better reporter than the reporters would make airline pilots!

Who voiced ‘idiot’ at 0:57? Or was that something else?

That's wonderful to know. It is a testament to all the airlines that employ experienced pilots.

I'll still take someone who has 2,000 hours of military aircraft experience, particularly including combat experience over a pilot with 2,000 hours in a Delta feeder.

Is it too late to elect Sully President?

Now that's a great idea. :)

The identifier for the plane that caught fire and crashed into the Everglades several years ago was Critter. They have some pretty creative call signs for themselves!

The show never resolved but, in a way, lived on in the show Pushing Daisies, which started out as a plot for an episode of Better Off Dead but it’s also been cancelled.

Sorry about that, it was the only thing I saw at this early stage. I’ll be looking for something more, especially a transcript of the entire flight, all two minutes or so.

I flew large airplanes between 1970 and 2004 - DC-3, -6, -7, -8, Connies, B-707, -720, -727, -737, -757, and -767

Wow, what a resume! Thank you for your service, sir.

Which of those aircraft was your favorite to fly? I've heard that the Connie was beautiful (and it was), but not fun to fly.

(paraphrased)

“1549, you can land runway one at Teterboro.”

“We can’t do it.”

“OK, which runway would you like at Teterboro?”

“We’re gonna be in the Hudson.”

...”I’m sorry, say again?”

Since it had such a wonderful ending, I can say, LOL! and the matter-of-fact tones both pilot and air traffic control use are just amazing. Thanks for posting, very interesting.
