Henry Kissinger, the pioneer of Cold War detente during the Nixon era, has made a return to frontline politics after President Barack Obama reportedly sent him to Moscow to win backing from Vladimir Putin's government for a nuclear disarmament initiative.
The Daily Telegraph has learned that the 85-year-old former US secretary of state met President Dmitry Medvedev for secret negotiations in December. According to Western diplomats, during two days of talks the octogenarian courted Russian officials to win their support for Mr Obama's initiative, which could see Russia and the United States each slashing their nuclear warheads to 1,000 warheads.
The decision to send Mr Kissinger to Moscow, taken by Mr Obama when he was still president-elect, is part of a plan to overcome probable Republican objections in Congress.
Mr Kissinger is believed to have won a verbal rather than written undertaking for the deal. Tom Graham, a senior associate at Kissinger Associates and a former member of the national security council in the White House, on Thursday confirmed that Mr Kissinger had met Mr Medvedev but denied that any negotiations had taken place and said he had not met with Mr Putin.
However, a diplomatic source said that Mr Kissinger held two days of talks with Mr Putin at his country house near Moscow.
While the details of the ambitious initiative are yet to be revealed, the proposal to return to the negotiating table after eight years of reluctance in Washington has been welcomed in Britain and elsewhere.
Mr Obama apparently chose Mr Kissinger for his consummate diplomatic skills and his popularity in Moscow, an affection earned by his open acknowledgment of Russia's international resurgence.
Despite his pariah status with many of Left-wingers in Mr Obama's Democratic Party, the president forged relations with Mr Kissinger during his campaign.....

More like New World Order Warrior or Bilderberger Stooge.
How is this old dude still going? He won't go away!
Forget about Russia, they had better be worrying about the Red Chinese and their growing arsenal. With over a billion people, with plenty to spare, they’ve certainly got the cajones to use their nukes if and when the time comes.
Do it both on the web and news. If you don't already know what's going on these days, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
Don’t forget nobody dude. When it comes to us, they are all together.
Russia is not going to give anything away. We will be disarming for naught.
With that said, the Russians have always been mostly bluster, and plus most of their strategic missiles probably aren't operational anyway because of the corrosive liquid fuels that they have always used.
The Chinese, on the other hand, are building a modern stockpile of solid-fuel ICBMs, with the latest in warhead technology, courtesy of Bill Clinton. They are far more ruthless and dangerous than the Russians could ever be.
Wonder how well Obama and Hilary are going to take Jimmy Carter’s meddling diplomatic excursions? It’s just a matter of time before the self-styled statesman heads off on a diplomatic “mission” to pursue his own foreign policy objectives. He’s done it to all of the presidents who followed him.
OK. After Mrs. Clinton finishes with the Japanese and Koreans she is going to pop in on the ChiComs. I hear they are interested in aircraft carriers.

I am so unsurprised, I can barely contain my yawn.

Ask my FRiend Jeff about the Red Chinese naval build-up.
From the Sino-Russian Joint Statement of April 23, 1997:
"The two sides [China and Russia] shall, in the spirit of partnership, strive to promote the multipolarization of the world and the establishment of a new international order."

War Games: Russia, China Grow Alliance
September 23, 2005
In foreign policy its critical to know thine enemy. So American policymakers should be aware that Russia and China are inching closer to identifying a common enemy the United States.
The two would-be superpowers held unprecedented joint military exercises Aug. 18-25. Soothingly named Peace Mission 2005, the drills took place on the Shandong peninsula on the Yellow Sea, and included nearly 10,000 troops. Russian long-range bombers, the army, navy, air force, marine, airborne and logistics units from both countries were also involved.
Moscow and Beijing claim the maneuvers were aimed at combating terrorism, extremism and separatism (the last a veiled reference to Taiwan), but its clear they were an attempt to counter-balance American military might.
Joint war games are a logical outcome of the Sino-Russian Friendship and Cooperation Treaty signed in 2001, and reflect the shared worldview and growing economic ties between the two Eastern Hemisphere giants. As the Pravda.ru Web site announced, the reconciliation between China and Russia has been driven in part by mutual unease at U.S. power and a fear of Islamic extremism in Central Asia.

Russia, China flex muscles in joint war games
Reuters: Aug 17, 2007
CHEBARKUL, Russia (Reuters) - Russia and China staged their biggest joint exercises on Friday but denied this show of military prowess could lead to the formation of a counterweight to NATO.
"Today's exercises are another step towards strengthening the relations between our countries, a step towards strengthening international peace and security, and first and foremost, the security of our peoples," Putin said.
Fighter jets swooped overhead, commandos jumped from helicopters on to rooftops and the boom of artillery shells shook the firing range in Russia's Ural mountains as two of the largest armies in the world were put through their paces.
The exercises take place against a backdrop of mounting rivalry between the West, and Russia and China for influence over Central Asia, a strategic region that has huge oil, gas and mineral resources.
Russia's growing assertiveness is also causing jitters in the West. Putin announced at the firing range that Russia was resuming Soviet-era sorties by its strategic bomber aircraft near NATO airspace.
