Those who have watched cable news lately have undoubtedly noticed conservative media figures attempting to rewrite history by denigrating the successes of Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal policies. This amounts to an orchestrated effort to derail the economic recovery plans of President Barack Obama.
Fox News' Brit Hume recently claimed that "everybody agrees, I think, on both sides of the spectrum now, that the New Deal failed." He's correct, if by "both sides of the spectrum" Hume is referring to the right and far-right over at Fox News. He then called Roosevelt's policies "a jihad against private enterprise."
Hume's own jihad against the facts represents only a portion of the historical misrepresentations passed off as reasoned debate of late.
Witness the machinations of those on MSNBC's "Morning Joe." During a recent broadcast, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski kicked off a string of attacks against the recovery plan, using the New Deal as their dubious weapon du jour. Brzezinski said of Obama's plan, "I think we're going to have the same unemployment in three or four years, just like the New Deal." That just isn't true. Unemployment fell from 1933 to 1937.
Her buddy Joe didn't fare much better, cherry-picking data in telling viewers that unemployment was at "20 percent" in 1938, ignoring the downward trend in unemployment that occurred under the New Deal.
Joe isn't alone. Conservative columnists George Will and Mona Charen have played the same numbers game to falsely claim the New Deal failed to reduce unemployment.

The author who penned this story is thoroughly ignorant of history. S/he obviously doesn’t care that America’s doldrums did not end with the massive infusion of government spending...and they are choosing to ignore the testimony and documentation provided by about 200 economists who agreed with the CATO Institute that Hussein’s plan is wrong.
Nothing like a 6 month trail building job to “stimulate” the economy.
the new deal took a simple Wall St correction and turned it into the great depression.
FDR let Pearl Harbor happen to get the country out of it.

Almost any socialist will contend: “The New Deal worked for me!”
It all depends on the meaning of the word “worked”.

That’s the funniest thing I have read in ages.
“We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. I want to see this country prosperous. I want to see people get a job. I want to see people get enough to eat. We have never made good on our promises ... After eight years of this Administration, we have just as much unemployment as when we started. ... And an enormous debt to boot!” Henry Morgenthau, Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Treasury secretary, on the failure of New Deal economic-”stimulus” policies, 1941.
You mean the Japanese Ambassador was complicit? Shocker /s
Time and again economist historians are more reliable discussing economic history than standard historians. This case is no different. Even most left-wing economists will admit that the New Deal exacerbated the Great Depression, rather than alleviate it.
Most “historians” are wrong even on the causes of the Great Depression, let alone what economic policies would have helped or hindered the situation.
It may do them well to check to see what the repercussions of passing and use of economic monetary bailout packages did to the Japanese economy during their economic crisis in the "Lost Decade."
They may want to do a little homework to determine which culprits are actually "rewriting history."
I grew up in it and this AH is full of S**t!
FDR prolonged the depression for 12 long years and instituted the horible socialism that we have today!
As I was taught as a child, FDR was the worst President that this country ever had at that time.
How can we lose elections when the liberal’s best and brightest are this dumb?
“FDR let Pearl Harbor happen to get the country out of it.”
Happen, no way, he negotiated it!
You could show that quote to liberals and they will shun it away like a vampire shunning away a cross. They refuse to hear it or believe it.

So it took 10 years for unemployment to return to pre-crash levels? That New Deal thingee wasn’t much of a fix if it took 10 years.
