The Lost City—Andy Garcia slap at Fidel and Communist Cuba
My Left Foot— Christy Brown who, afflicted with cerebral palsy, becomes a respected artist and author. The hero’s talent and will-power are formidable, but another theme is the indispensable role of Christy’s strong and united family.
Lean on Me—Crazy Joe Clark tries to clean up an inner city school with NO HELP from the school board
Stand and Deliver—young Mexicans learn calculus when everyone said they were too dumb
The enfolding list is from the last 25 years.
Patton was made in 1970.
Well, Red Dawn should get the top 5 spots and the others can fight for #6 thru #25.
Not sure if you saw Juno...but the scene in the movie where she goes to an abortion clinic to abort her baby...but the clinic is so nasty and the Goth chick receptionist is so weird...Juno freaks and runs out and away the clinic...much to the delight of the young pro-life protester outside the clinic.
I suspect Red Dawn will make the list.
My bad....just noticed “lswt 25 yrs” ;-)
I saw Gran Torino over the week end and I’m really not sure what to make of it. It was a pretty good movie though I had hoped for a slightly different ending. I think Clint may have been attempting to bitch slap Spike Lee in at least one scene. I mean, he didn’t have any blacks in Flags of Our Fathers, but he did in this one. But even in that scene that white ‘black wannabecame’ came out looking worse than the black, uh, yoots. I can honestly say I’ve never seen a movie in which so many racist statements were made by a white character.
Yeah I realized what you reffering to after posting.
‘Crimes and Misdeamnors’?
This thread reminds me of that scene from Airplane about the leaflet for famous Jewish sports legends.
Woody Allen films are automatically disqualified from any hint of conservative thought. Same with any movies associated with Barbra Streisand or Ron Howard (Sorry, "Apollo 13", one of my favorite movies)
That’s silly. John Ford was a mean old liberal but made quite a few films beloved by conservatives.
"Signs"
If it were the best in the last 75 years, my vote would be “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” with Jimmy Stewart (1939)
Too bad there isn’t just one like him in the Congress today...
One that I have not seen mentioned yet was Bella, a good pro life movie. Some of my favorites would be:
The Patriot
300
Dark Knight
Braveheart
We Were Soldiers
Black Hawk Down
One I just saw the other day was American Carol and another funny one is Team America.
Summing up the NRO list thus far:
“I can honestly say Ive never seen a movie in which so many racist statements were made by a white character.”
Seen Blazing Saddles?
