MEXICO CITY -- Mexican troops today seized the municipal police headquarters in the resort city of Cancun as an investigation deepened into the slaying there of a recently retired army general.
Scores of soldiers backed by two armored cars took over the offices amid press reports that Cancun's police chief and other officials may be implicated in the Feb. 2 torture-killings of Gen. Mauro Tello, his bodyguard and his driver.
Cancun's public safety chief and six officers from its traffic police department were removed from their posts, the mayor's office said today. Federal investigators arrrested the public safety director, Francisco Velasco, who faces charges related to the killings, a spokesman for the Mexican attorney general's office said..
The tortured and shot bodies of Tello, 63, and the other men -- a former army lieutenant who was working as his aide and the nephew of Cancun's mayor -- were discovered before dawn in a pickup abanoned on a highway west of Cancun.
Cancun's mayor had announced Tello's hiring as a security consultant the day before the general was killed. Tello had been expected to replace Velasco as police chief.
Army troops have moved to dismantle local security forces across Mexico when those police are thought to be corrupted by organized crime. Soldiers are now patrolling in areas most affected by the drug cartel-driven violence that last year killed more than 5,400 people. Many of the slayings were in Ciudad Juarez, Reynosa and other cities bordering Texas.

Attention students! Cancel Cancun Spring Break Plans!
Are there any good guys to root for in this story?
Ft Lauderdale needs the money.

Good God...
Looks like our next war will be right next door!
The war is already there. Let’em fight it out by themselves.
What is Cancun anyway but a haven for drug-sniffing American brats. It is a valuable piece of property for drug lords and for that reason the General had to die.
Thank heavens I don’t vacation there. The one and only time we ever went we had a driver that took us sight seeing and we got way to close to Guatamala for my taste. It was a miserable experience. The people were not friendly and they overcharged beyond belief. I did like the ones that would bargain. That was fun.
IMO, I've done business with both sides both in the private sector and then in law enforcement. NO, in this case, there are NO GOOD GUYS, there are individuals though, there always are. I really feel anxious about good friends down there.
Right now, several factions are warring and the problem is that the "good guys" have too many bad guys looking for the same control within the Federalistas and local LEOs. I think it's a lose-lose situation right now. As long as it's contained within their country let them fight it out.
Our immediate problem is our border and in Texas, I think Perry is asleep at the wheel. Why there aren't major troop movements (at least TX guard and assets) on the border now is a mystery. Mexican gov't understands FORCE and we need a strong show of force with hair-trigger ROE.
Unfortunately I suspect there are a lot of people in our government want a refugee crisis to develop.
We’ve been the safety valve on the Mexican pressure cooker for far too long.
You may want to rebook to Detroit or East St. Louis. You’ll be safer.
I don’t think my cruise ship dock in either place!
Things have collapsed in Mexico I was told by a Border Patrol Agent the Border looks like a disturbed ant hill all coming this way!
